Long Way down
« on: November 04, 2007, 10:20:15 PM »

have to admit that I really liked the long way round and watched the long way down last Sunday and enjoyed that too so watched it again tonight and it's really good.

for anyone who's been in hivernation it's on on BBC2 on Sunday 9pm and is repeated in the week (don't have the repeat details)

ok yes much the same as the long way round but I like it  :icon_thumright:

I traveled Africa for 5 years before I came here. Some of those countries are dodgy and as the guy said it can go tits up real quick. We always carried our own IV kit because needles in africa tend to get re-used and we always made certain we knew where the embassy was or which was the closest friendly country in case we had to run for the border. dramatic I know but when you've seen what goes on you have to be prepared.

Check out  'Mondo Enduro' and 'Terra Circa' at www.aimimage.com/shop.php Austin Vince and Co. are the real deal.

Andy, my mother-in-law and her partner have been circumnavigating the globe on a XT600 for the last 11yrs. They rode from Dunstable to India in 1996 and are currently crossing from Venezuela into Guyana in south america, they're both in they're 50's and totally live the 'dream' as some people call it :icon_thumright:

superb  [pray]  I'm really keen to do a few weeks (it's all I can afford) in 2009 with a friend hopefully, no big adventure as such just a bit of biking time soemwhere else and it will be brilliant I'm sure  :icon_thumright:  Huge respect to your M-I-L and partner for living a dream  :icon_thumright:

The Long way stuff just brings into everyone's homes what can be and comaraderie (spell?) when on a journey like that.......... it just makes me want to watch it from my safe living room but also makes me wonder about the great albeit small adventures i could have if I wasn't such a fekking dreamer   [whistle]  [wall]

cheers Andy, they've been on the south american trip since october last year and return next may, to be honest anyone can do it with planning and preparation,
However, you have to give up everything in order to fund these trips and it is a HARD way of life really, living off the back of a bike ain't easy but the rewards are huge :icon_thumright:  Ewan Mcgregor and Co can do what they do because money really isn't an issue and they have all the backup they could wish for  and it's more money.

top marks to those that take the plunge out of the  normal world. Memories are better than dreams but someone has to keep the world running. respect to almost all, I for one can't imagine living and travelling long distance two up on a bike. I bet they've got some stories to tell I hope their luck is all good . get off your asses and make it happen( though here I know a lot of you do, it's why I like the forum)

If your mother in law has fecked off to the other side of the world for the last 11 years I'd say it's you living the dream as much as her !

As for the long way round/down, seen some bits of the old one, makes good TV but at the end of the day it's just more of the 'celebrity culture' thing that's plaguing us these days - 'celebrity come biking' !

pat, they haven't gone for a total of 11yrs [rofl] but they go for about anything from 9mths to 2yrs, they come back rent a house save like fuck, plan then go again. And just for the record she's the coolest mother-in-law you could wish for, totally laid back complete nutter and her partner Peter is also the same. They both had top jobs but gave up the rat race to see the world on a bike. They also hoon about on a RSV Mille when home. And concerning the stories they are the most interresting people you could talk to :icon_thumright:

Well the last show where the covered Calais to Mont Blanc tunnel and the Alps got me and a mate talking about the same journey we did 14 years ago when we went to Mugello and back in 5 days. Its spurned us to look at the Germany Gp next year and get off our fat arses and go beyond the next county for a ride.  Oh and Mondo Enduro is very good and people should watch it if they ever get the chance.
