Donkey Engine??? Track bikes with no starter?
« on: August 29, 2011, 03:50:10 PM »

Bit of advice wanted really.
An "old boy" mate of mine was having difficulty kicking over his vintage bikes after a hip replacement so he had an electric "donkey Motor?" made.
It wont start his old classics for some reason but when we tried it on an 08 fireblade it fired up perfectly.
He wants me to sell it for him but not sure how to describe it or whether it would be of any use to anyone for starting track bikes as it is electric and not all tracks have power points available.
Any ideas as to what else it could be used for?

Sorry bud,
I didn't intend for it to sound like a "For Sale", was really after opinions as to how best to put it on ebay etc.
Taken all references to price out now.
Hope thats ok.

or whether it would be of any use to anyone for starting track bikes as it is electric and not all tracks have power points available.
To be fair most people who run a track or race bike with no starter will probably be using tyre warmers and will have a genny

Ah, a sensible reply at last.
Problem is, i think a genny would struggle to power it.

Just think of how much lighter your bike would be with no starter! [whistle]

Just think of how much lighter your bike would be with no starter! [whistle]

it's more to do with doing away with the gubbins inside the motor too, as it will have starter (sprag)clutches etc. Usually you make the ignition total loss at the same time, removing the alternator, reg/ref etc. It is quite a weight loss and makes the engine more responsive and powerfull. It's like removing weight from the flywheel.
You can also do away with a big battery and get a smaller lighter one as it's the starter motor which makes you need such a big heavy one..
