Time to upgrade
« on: June 26, 2010, 10:10:55 AM »

Guys, the time (and nearly the funds!) has come to go for a litre sports bike. Given my membership here and my Green heritage on two wheels the obvious choice is the ZX10R. So off I pop down to GT Motorcycles in Plymouth. Imagine my horror when getting on the 06 10 they have down there when I cramped up on the top of my thighs just sitting on the upright bike in the shop!

I have a 2000 ZX6R (J1) which means I am used to a big bike. I am only 5'9'' and weigh in around 13 stone so medium build (not thin or fat). I've seen numerous 6ft and larger/longer people riding newish litre sports bikes so how come?? I took the more comfortable 04 fireblade out for a test ride which sold me on upgrading to a litre bike, but am gutted about what happened when i got on the 10R. I have decided to take it out for a test ride, just in case it was a freak reaction.

So the question is: are there rearsets out there to reduce the height of the pegs (or more importantly the height and acute bend of my knees compared with my hips) which is causing the problem. Next is there a more comfortable riding position in a particular gen of the 10R? Help!!

I should point out that my current job has me working night shifts in an office environment and I got on the 10R and test rode the fireblade after completing a 15 hour shift.

Cheers,

Julie

I am the same height and I have no bother at all with my 10R (C2H) there is lots of room on it after my last bike.

If you think 10's are cramped, you wanna try sitting on a GSXR .......

Go for a 1st gen 10, they are really different, my mate had one and then rode mine and he was amazed at how cramped the 06 ones are
of course being a 5'2" short arse, its just perfect for me hehehe

:iamwithstupid:  You soon get used to it, take it out for a blast the grin factor will win you over, the Blades are great bikes but they are that good they get really boring, the 10R will keep you on your toes every step of the way.  :icon_thumright:

I'm the same height as you and I have no problems on my first gen, apart from pain in my wrists on track days through hard braking but when I bother to get stomp grips that should stop

Stomgrips are the best bit of kit you can add to your bike, when you have stuck them on you will wonder how you rode without them that are brilliant!

ZX10r's are abit cramped i had an 06 and an 09, I am 6ft 2. Ifd you want a big bike the R1 of all years are good for that but i have just bought the S1000RR sport and it is great, looks small but feels big.

The ZX10 have always been a no compramise bike and fast too.

Guys and Gal,

Thanks for all the supportive advice  :icon_thumright:. I will continue my search for a 1st Gen (though i am already aware Allstar is looking for a buyer for his - just wrong end of the country). In the meanwhile I think I will keep test riding anything that comes along. There's no rush (except in my own mind) as my 6 still works well enough to commute me 66 miles a day, but would love to be on a fresh new bigger baby while the weather is so awesome  :glasses9:.

Very briefly tested an 05 10R today enroute to Birmingham. I say briefly because the bike was being sold through a dealer on behalf of a private client, therefore the dealer was not keen to let it be ridden to far - additionally the fuel light was already on and the dealer had no fuel on the premises or at his workshop. So the test ride consisted of a 20-30mph trip around the block; hardly what I would have liked. The upshot is that I fit on an 05 gen 1 with no issues whatsoever! Now looking to retry on an 06 / 07 model (the only other ones in my price range) to see if the GT "incident" was a nasty fluke.

Thanks again to all who responded for taking the time to provide re-assurance. I have to say my head is still being turned by the 06 fireblade in the white/black/red HRC though!
