would it be illegal?
« on: January 03, 2010, 12:12:38 PM »

As my last post informed you guys i,ve recently acquired a zx6 trackbike. It has no V5 so not road legal. As yet i haven,t even ridden the thing and previous owner was straight with me and said that the last trackday he did on the very last session the gearbox was a bit iffy changing from 3rd to 4th. My dillema is this,... i want to ride the bike to go up through the gearbox and check it out, and as our local port shopping car park is huge (and completely empty at night) and has a huge perimeter road,  this would offer me the chance. Now dont get me wrong, i,m not gonna take the piss and use it for kneedown or wheely practise, i literally want to
just go up through the gears. I,ve been told it,s not classed as public highway but my instinct tells me i,d still get fooked for it, what do you think?
I know the easy option is to book a trackday, but i don,t fancy going out on a bike that i,ve already been informed has a slight gearbox problem (end up being flagged off, or possibly worse ! :crybaby2:) and i dont want to run it into my local mechanic to fix a problem that supposedly only happened once and secondly i haven,t felt for myself. Imagine shelling out for a transmission overhaul only to be told " nothing wrong with it" :icon_scratch:
Any suggestion? ( other than sell it  [rofl] )

The road traffic act of 1988 extended the definition of 'road' to include areas such as car parks where the public have access, so normal road laws apply in places like supermarket car parks, but not in private ones like works car parks reserved for employees only.

Thanx for that info Pat, i will give tha car park a miss then! :icon_thumright:

Im just near Blackpool. Our nearest Dyno is Andy at Junction 33 in Galgate, but as Hoody zx10 suggested , if i booked dyno time wouldn,t i be in a similar scenario to Mongo`s paddock stand suggestion? ie... the bike on a dyno wouldn,t be under normal load conditions? :icon_scratch:

I know its naughty, but if you have a road bike (especially a zx10 or a zx6) that is taxed and insured etc, just mount the number plate onto it......yes its highly illegal, but you are highly unlikely to get pulled or reported, like you would if you didnt have a plate.

The dyno is the most sensible option, but the dyno operator may not let you actually ride it yourself, so you wont be able to feel the gearbox.
