losing the front

The previous post reminded me of recent trackdays 'cept mine concerns 'losing the front' :shock:
Recently i've tried to get on the gas earlier in a bend 'cos i heard SOMEWHERE that you can't lose the front when on the gas... :icon_scratch:
Is this true??
It sure seems to help stabilize the bike & makes me feel quicker thru the corner

Haha who told you that! :) It all depends which part of the turn you are talking about, turn in, apex or exit.  Most people lose the front because they hang on to the front brake too long

I thought i read it in one of my Keith Code books or Superbike School threads....

I can see how u lose the front when loaded up in the bend/trailbrakin etc so if you unload the front earlier in the bend with a positive or neutral throttle surely you cant lose the front as its no longer 'stressed' i.e. the loads now transferred to the rear...

Is this bollox?

yep course it is, i guess your less likely to loose the front than on the brakes but if your on the gas your pushing the front plus taking some load from it.

I'd say its common sense. The sooner you can take the stress off the front the less chance of loosing it. By rolling the throttle on as soon as its safe to do so makes the back dig in and allows the front to do its job of steering.  I'm with allsorts on this.

If you take too much load off the front, it will barely be touching the 'mac and therefore not gripping. Ok if youre nearly upright but not if youre still cranked over. In an extreme case, it would be like wheelying at full lean. Youre gonna lose the front. Similarly, you can lose the back on a closed throttle. Extremes either way will see you on your arse. Everything in moderation.

thats true
its about stability in the corner.
A positive throttle (slightly pulling) will keep the bike on line and suspension stable. too much and you'll regret it and at the same time scrubbing off too much speed will also see you on the deck.
you should be braking before the turn and on initial tip in if needed. then ease of the brake slowly so as not to POGO the suspension.
similarly as soon as possible after the apex you wind on slowly and positively as you stand the bike up....

i've nearly lost the rear a few times from shutting the throttle off abruptly and counter steering hard....

nearly pood me pants doing it too.....

Dont know if this is relevant but was watching the last Moto gp race and when Pedrosa crashed after his front end folded mid corner I think it was Steve Parrish that explained that it happened because he let the front brake off and because of that the front tyre wasnt squished into the tarmac like it was when he was braking so the contact patch was smaller and there was less grip


Kinda different with our road/track tyres as opposed to top spec motogp tyres, dont have to work em so hard. Kenny Roberts senior has also been quoted saying hes never seen anyone lose the front on the gas
