advice on steering please.
« on: June 29, 2009, 02:55:29 PM »

hi folks, after a couple of trackdays this year seems that whats holding me back is
how fast can you steer into a corner.

i know all about counter steering etc.

so the question is exactly how fast can you counter steer to get the bike turned,
im asking how much pressure do you put on the bars to turn realy fast.
the same as the pressure you would use doing a pressup? etc.

if i get this mastered i'll be doing ok i think, so your help/advice appreciated :icon_thumleft:

that really depends on speed
randy mamola once bent his clipon from counter steering
you're trying to fight gyroscopic force and the faster it spins the more force you need to counter steer.
you just have to push slightly harder each time

thats a very difficult question to answer. :dontknow:

just practice at your next day,but it all depends on.......

are the clip ons lowered?
how fast you are going?
tyres...
suspension set up....

plus a few bits more.

if you find it difficult to turn in,get your tyres/suspension looked at,or you could even lower the headstock/forks 5-10mm,or jack up the rear, but this again has it's own drawbacks.

higher speeds are the problem, 90mph or there abouts.

some times i brake to much and steer round corner and then realise i could of gone 10mph
faster through it.

i konow its a difficult question, think i'll get an instructor to help next trackday :icon_thumleft:

Better that than to not make it around. At least next lap you can try a bit faster and build up.  :-P

I've been reading a book called "Total Control" and he says something in there that I've been trying and fook me it works. He does say that when you try it for teh first time you might run of the track....not wide.....but on the inside. I didn't believe it but have been trying it and I have had to stand the bike up a couple of times as it was turning to sharp.

When steering you need to use one hand for steering, best is your inside hand and total relax the other one, keep it loosely on the bars or throttle but don't do a death grip. When using two hands you have two hands fighting each other. It takes a little practice and forcing yourself to think about it the first couple of times but it has changed my riding once I got it right. Relax your outside arm and let teh inside arm do the work.

Good book I have learnt loads from it and it has pictures showing wrong and right.( Jus tin case like me you can't read) [rofl]

impossible to answer, just practice if in doubt get some track lessons from a pro, best advice is to stay clear of track day/forum talk on this one.

I agree each person has there own style ,comfort zone etc and only they can find it through practice.
