The fat boy starts the road to get fitter
« on: March 23, 2008, 09:35:01 PM »

Well,

I've put on shadloads of weight over winter and now I'm on my 40's it loads up even faster, meaning that I need to eat better and most importantly get to a reasonable level of fitness.

I guess this is a battle that I have to live with now every year, long gone are the days when I ate and drunk all I wanted and stayed at a skinny 10.5 stones at 6 feet tall.

These days it's closer to 16 stones !   Well from 14.5 in the late summer to alomst 16 now is just bloody awful. There I was up ladders today cleaing the fascia and guttering thinking fekk me these ladders might snap with fat old me on them

I've been bus with DIY and gardening etc over the last couple of months but no real exercise, coupled up with 11 hours a day either sat behind a desk or in the car is just no good.

Here's the machine that WILL get me fit  :icon_thumright:  It's my 5 year old mountain bike , I threw some cheap disc brakes on over a year ago and replaced the pedal bearing thing so it's all ready to go, looks like it'll get a run tomorrow if the weather is reasonable too

do any of you guys cycle to keep fit ?

aye, running is a killer when you are as heavy and unfit as I am at the moment, looks like a ride to chester will do me just fine (10 miles approx each way) but fiirst just a few miles to get in the Rhythm and I have all that saddle agony to get through too

Well done Andy hope you get the results mate.

I do quite abit of running down the gym. I used to think it was the best thing for me and its cuts me right down but recently its not doing as much as it used to. Its the old thing they say about your body gets used to one form of excersise very quickly and you need to vary the type of excersise you do for maximum gains.

Jon thats called "The Training Affect" happens every 4 to 6 weeks your body gets used to a diet or training program so you need to change it  :icon_thumright:

i swim hard twice a week, and most days just for a splash and warm up......plus play squash once or twice a week and dance most days...cycling is fun in spring and autumn, hate  it in the summer and winter...even though its supposedly spring now...brr...

running is hard on joints as you age...and cycling is hard on your life...worse than mortorbikes in my opinion unless your off road leave em in the shed....

eat healthy, keep up regular excercise of some kind and you will stay fit...

its the breaks in training that make it hard...if you have been out for a few years you will you will find it tough nigh on impossible to lose significant weight by exercise alone...

If you have been used to very aggressive training (ie competitive sports) before and can really buckle down to a very intenseive non destructive, progressive  training schedule then it wont be too hard...however...beware the over work early stages and the risks of pulling muscles and or worse...above 40 it takes an age for muscles to heal.....

If you are more than 3 stone over weight you should progress very very slowly, and remove all of the bad foods in your diet....I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMEND A PROTEIN RICH DIET FOR SAY 4 WEEKS PRIOR TO ANY INTENSE TRAINING PROGRAMME.  THEN EAT A NORMAL CARBOHYDRATE BASED DIET WITH ENOUGH CALORIES TO KEEP YOU FROM BEING TIRED BUT NOT ENOUGH TO ADD ANY MASS...IE NO OR LIMITED FATS...AND BUILD YOUR EXCERCISE REGIME UP SLOWLY AND EFFECTIVELY THEN KEEP DOING IT

check out supplements dude.... there are lots of things that will help with muscle repair and joint pains..... only thing is it gets expensive and they only help a small amount.... nothing stops aging yet unfortunately I know you about the same age as me Chris but its when the downward spiral starts  :emb:
