Chain and sprockets
« on: January 25, 2008, 10:26:35 PM »

Who here changes their own chain and sprockets? I've never done it, to lazy.
My chain is slightly rusty because of sitting outside can I get away with just changing the chain? it's done 5500 miles? or does it have to sprockets as well.
Wondering if I should by a chain splitter/riviter and do it myself?

aye, get a splitter unit that presses too (a god idea is to split the cost with a couple of mates or ask if a mates already got one) and best to always replace the set really as the wear on the chain will most prob be reflected in the sprockets too, however if it's just some surface rust on the chain it will prob be ok to only replace the chain, personally I'd alway change the set though  :icon_thumright:

At only 5500 miles you would have had to have been really hammering the bike to need to replace the chain, let alone the sprockets.

If it's just a bit of rust on the chain, clean it off and give it a damn good lube.

I ususally clean my chain with a tooth brush and some white spirits, comes up loverly, then takethe bike for a quick run to warm the chain up, get it back on the paddock stand whilst the chain is warm then lube.

:icon_thumright: i'm the same. It just likes shite and as my first track day is with the Gixer boys I know my bike is going to get criticised. I'll do some riding in Feb and March and see how chain and sprockets look after that.

Have just changed my chain and sprockets have put on 520DID and Renthal Sprockets! Do it yourself dead easy, remember to brake the nut on small drive sprocket first whilst chain is on. You can then lock back wheel with piece off wood through wheel and swinging arm as for breaking chain just find soft link and grind heads off.

5500 miles ain't nothing for a chain if it's been adjusted and cleaned properly. Just get a tooth brush and some parrafin and clean it, brushing the two sides and rollers then rinse it off. Then adjust it and a take it for a run to get it hot then park up and lovingly lube it while chain is warm for lube to soak in so you don't get any fling. Look after your chain like this on a regular basis and it'll last twice the milage you've got easy.  :icon_thumright:

hey budddy, yeah I lube once a week when I wash the bike. :icon_thumright: Does white spirits remove the rust. I'm not worried about the wear of teh chain and sprockets just teh rust on the chain, it's not heavy but defo looks shite.

Dunno, haven't got rust on mine.  :dontknow:  If the bike is gonna sit for quite a while ,I normally coat the thing in loads of lube before hand then clean with parrafin before using it again.
