I didn't go for a ride today. Billy nomates today. But thats not the issue. I'm starting to ride slower and slower, my mind is making me slower and more cautious.

Everytime I see a crash or hear of one of you guys binning it it affects my mental capacity to ride a zx10. In fact I think I'm going to trade in tomorrow for an ER6 or maybe a Clio. The more I sit at home and think about it the more I realise I'm 39 have two kids and a lovely wife and I need to be sensible and calm down

But then I got the steed out today washed & polished it, started it up to dry it out and I thought to myself it sounds to good, it looks to good and when I ride it I feel alive. I live once and yes I want a long life. Because the longer I live the more time I have for riding the 10...

Trade her in ..... not a chance.
If I ever think like this again all I have to do is go out side and start her up.

I know how ya feel mate,I thought I was quick, only to find out I am in fact,SLOW.
But,I am quick,it's me mind playing tricks,or,Altzhiemers kicking in at my age. And I am 58! :crybaby2:

Jon really sorry to hear about your mate.

There have been a lot of crashes and near misses on the forum the last 3 weeks.  It's just part of riding bikes, I know guys who have had serious accidents, over the years it's probably about 1 in 10 of any group you regularly ride with will get a serious injury.

I've been out on the bike today but I really focus on track riding and probably do less than 1000 road miles a year, as I've got faster on track road riding has just kind of lost it's appeal for me.  The guy I ride with has given up road bikes completely following a nasty crash on his CBR600 that has left him with his shoulder pinned.  You just have to decide whatever is best for you.....I love riding bikes as fast as I possibly can but I know the road is just not the place for quick riding any more......

Biking is an addiction as strong as any drug you could get hooked on.....it's just unbeatable, I know during the winter I miss it terribly and use the time to do work on the bikes in the garage to try and stay in touch.  I can often be sat at a meeting in work and my mouth will be saying one thing while by brain is hooking 5th gear through the Jim Clark esses at Croft.......I read somewhere that people who ride bikes are very unlikely to become depressed.  It's like we have our own therapy session with each ride...... ..

Where the hell am I going with this.......the risks are very real and the effect on your family if you are unlucky could be devastating........life is risk.....but I think if you are open and honest with yourself when you have a "moment" then the risks can be controlled as much as possible.  The positive benefits of biking far outweigh the negatives but the track is the place to really find out what you and your bike can do.......

Well put again Jim, if I don't feel comfortable with a ride I'll pull over take 5 and a breather and try to settle in again.

Yeah Jim966,that's it,ride within yours and the bikes limits,be careful, but have fun,use the power of the machine,it still gives me a hell of a thrill when I can shoot past a whole line of cars, they just don't have the accelleration,it's fantastic.I will keep on till I can't do it no more. :hello2:

I say ride defensively, dont trust other road users ( Even those you ride with ) and know the unexpected can happen.  There is no need to give up bikes unless you really feel that is best, but enjoy them.  Drive sensibly and keep your distance and when the road is clear and you can see there are no potential hazzards then go for it.

My Crash changed the way i drive completly, and it was another member of my group that caused my crash.  I still drive in a group but i keep my distance.  I still drive full throtle, but only when i can see there is no danger.  I think the track is a good idea too, as we ofetn have too much testosterone, and the track can use some up!

I am not saying i will never have another crash, but i can minimise the risks and still have fun!

Oh.  One last point and a piece of advise to those who do not do this.  Practise emergency stops, and practise them regularly.  Dont rely on an incident to test you.

Be safe and keep her rubber side down.

shongololo - good thread mate. This forum has shocked me too with the reported number of crashes, especially the 'bad' ones.

Concerning  safety, despite the press hype about the TEN being a track tool-bike for nutters-go faster on the Honda but not as much fun type of bike - I DEFINITELY feel alot safer on this than any other of my previous bikes.

Which is weird 'cause I only bought it whilst looking for a smaller lighter bike with lots of stomp (latest CBR600rr was a possibility) I was fed up struggling in car parks or threading through traffic sat on a lardy dinausaur. The TEN is brill for that it being so small and light (feeling). But what I didn't expect was how settled and composed and unflustered this bike is at speed. To me it just feels safer.

Which is a bit at odds to its reputation.

I reckon that speed-for-speed this bike is actually safer than most others - how stable it is under brakes - how capable it is of staying composed on bumpy roads (you sure feel the bumps but you dont boing about for ages afterwards or wallow into next week), how easy it is to change direction at speed, how easily it goes where you point it and how well you feel all the road surfaces.

In fact the only 'not safe' bit is the power, but most crashes talked about recently are probably at less than a ton (apart from JON177s 120 mph lowside) which you can do on a 125 so 'speed/power'' doesnt cause the crash anyhow.

I will almost definitely be the most 'wallyest' and unlikely ZX10 rider on this forum but to me having come from a range of big capacity non-sports bikes the Zx10 is a super safe super competent machine (apart from the fill ya pants power delivery of course).
Trade down and the world of compromise engineering greets you with weaves and wobbles and shite powerless overtakes. You'll be bored within 2days !

I agree Fossil. I've come from a '98 ZX6 G1 to an '07 10r and I was worried about the bike. I still have a bit of a mental block going through corners, I have relaxed a lot due to the fact I have learnt right wrist control. I feel alot safer on the 10 than my old bike.

Maybe thats a bad thing, but I defo feel safer I just need to not be so shit scared of the power and worrying about it highsiding mid corner. Last Friday it did a power wheelie ( I don't do wheelies) and it caught me by surprise but it didn't scare me I still felt in control.
