Check this out.....she flies!
« on: May 15, 2007, 04:14:31 PM »

Hi

I'm new to this forum but have recently converted to the dark-side and bought an 04-ZX10 Race bike.

The bike is great.... we've been out to Cadwell and Croft so far this year and it is a nice step up from my previous bike a YR2000 R1.  I find the 10 a lot easier to ride than the R1.  It brakes and turns a lot easier and the power delivery is less torquey so it's a lot easier to control the rear when you get on the gas.

The clutch ate itself yesterday at the end of a hard day at Croft.......bit of a pain in the A*se but the plan is to re-build it with race spec friction plates.

Anyay here's the spec if anyone is interested!

04-Zx10
PC3, full Akropovik system with "stubby" end can, K&N filter, de-restriction module, 167 BHP at the wheel.
Ohlins shock, K-tech 20mm cartridge kit in the forks, Ohlins steering damper, suspension professionally set up by Mick Grant.
Quick action throttle.
Adjustable rearsets with race shift pattern.
Brembo 320mm disks with Brembo Master cylinder.
Gilles chain adjusters.

The paint job was on the bike when I bought it......not something I would spend money on on a track bike but it's kind of cool and makes the bike really stand out in the paddock......

Hope you like it! Interested to hear from anyone else using the zx-10 on track!

Cheers

Jim

I'm hoping it's just the plates.....it was getting grabby during the day and trying to lock the rear wheel going into the corners as if the slipper clutch had stopped working.....I'm pretty sure it's the clutch as there was a hell of a "death rattle" coming from behind the clutch cover on the bike.......just hoping it's nothing more serious!

It's in to the Kawasaki dealership at the end of the month to get sorted.......i'm going to go for race clutch plates to try and stop it happening in the future........

Glenn if you reckon the 99R1 is flat then either you rode it like a pussy or it was fooked.

Welcome to the site  :icon_thumleft:

The bike looks great,i'm sure ive seen it before somewhere but not sure where.

Shame about the clutch but i'm sure it will be better when youve fixed it.

I agree about the early R1's being very torquey low down. My mate had a 98 that i rode a couple of times. The 10R has the torque slightly further up the rev range by the feel of it but has a screaming top end to go with it. Where as the R1 give that huge shove and then went linear up top.

Welcome to the site  :icon_thumleft:

I agree about the early R1's being very torquey low down. My mate had a 98 that i rode a couple of times. The 10R has the torque slightly further up the rev range by the feel of it but has a screaming top end to go with it. Where as the R1 give that huge shove and then went linear up top.

I'd agree with that.....don't get me wrong...... the ZX-10 is a proper animal on short gearing mine tries to wheelie into the dip as you go onto Cadwell's back straight in 4th gear.....it's just that the chassis is so much better than the early R1 that the whole thing feels a lot more controllable.......the R1 needed a lot of rear ride height to make it turn into the faster corners and this could often leave the back end a bit loose on the exits...the big torque hit early on (7000 rpm ish) would make the rear slide quite easily where as the Zx-10 just seems to dig in, grip and lift the front instead........

Very impressed with it overall, it's just such a good package of power and handling.  The R1 never liked turning in on the brakes where as this bike is happy trailing the brake to the apex....it's just so sure footed.  The 04 Zx-10 seemed to get a reputation as being a real handful with the bike press but it is just not the case.....anyone who owned an early R1 would find this thing is a piece of p*ss in comparison..........the biggest test of all for me is that I can ride this bike really hard for 10 laps and still maintain concentration at the end of it....the R1 was a lot more tiring to ride fast, I could usually only string together 3 or 4 fast laps on that before looking for the pit lane and taking a break....

I could have gone sensible and bought a fireblade but I wanted this bike because of it's raw edge....I have had Hondas in the past and they bored me senseless!
