mountain bike chat
« on: January 20, 2013, 09:33:32 AM »

right chaps after selling my kona a year ago now im now on the look out for another bike im not looking for a bike thats quite as hardcore as the kona.
i would like a full suspension and do like the look of the orange 5's and have always wanted one since being a lad, its been around for quite long now and i dont no if its a bit outdated now?
so im asking for opinions please from the riders on here i will have about 1300 to spend so it will be second hand and a few years old.
im doing the london to brighton this year aswell so i need something quite light and up to the job as that 75 miles is going to be a killer  :headbang:

Have a serious look at Cube - there is nothing else of a similar spec for the money.

if you are looking for great value and new take a look at Canyon, great spec and reviews but online only, everyone I've met with one loves it including my riding buddy who has a nerve7.0 as his second bike

I had a kona stab which i loved to bits but just not practical for round here, i really like the orange but there are so many makes and models to choose from now.
Il take a look at canyon later the only other thats caught my eye is the lapierre zesty but i dont no if it looks like it will climb aswell as will go down, i had a look at the cubes hammy there nice aswell but i dont think there my taste thanks for the suggestion though

the Zesty is a nice bike too, it will climb ok but is more all mountain than XC, it depends on what you are looking to ride really.

I manage ok on a Yeti 575 with Fox 36 forks on the climbs and it's superb on the downhills, I'm assuming that you are looking for some all mountain fun, climbing ability but fast downhill too, again the 5 is a great all rounder but only 140mm travel unless you chose the expensive AM route

I'd go for a pre-owned 5 or go for a Canyon nerve as their prices are good too, but this is XC and not AM

As you know the stab is a downhill bike so I expect that you'd bounce like 'tigger' up the climbs, it's an uplift bike really

Yeah thats 1 way of putting it about the stab it didnt do uphill but it was bloody good at going down it gave that false sence of taking on whatever was infront of it at the time!
Yeah im looking more xc now so il keep looking for a orange when i get one il post some pics thanks for the advice  :icon_thumright:

I can remember Steve Peat winning the uk DH championships back in the early 90s on a rigid Kona, doubtless he was faster than we'd be on a full bounce dh bike today ;)

My vote too, I've got a cube arms pro. Better than the VCR it replaced

Cube match their "ends" - so 120 is 120mm either end.
