Best tyres for Road and Hard track riding???
« on: October 05, 2012, 07:56:22 PM »

Ive got 2004 zx10r with avon tyres, but they need renewing, i want road tyres but i do about 6-7 trackdays a year so i want real sticky tyres for that, ive been looking at Dunlop sportsmart or Pirelli diablo rosso corsa's or Michellin power pure. Does anyone use these or have any preference.  :headbang:

I had Maxxis Supermaxx on my ZX9R and they were shit hot, great for the road and on the track, they saved me a few times and they are a decent price i would highly recommend them :icon_thumright:

Sportsmart grip and wear well, but have a very stiff carcase. If you like a lot of feedback, then this is the tyre for you. I got 4K out of a rear Sportsmart incl 2 track days

Pirelli have a much softer, more forgiving carcase and would be my personal favourite on the road as they cope with rough pavement better and seem to suit the bike. They also appear to have a taller profile, but I'm not certain of that  :icon_scratch:

Never tried the Power Pures, so cant comment on them  :-S

You are quite correct sir, Pirelli have a taller profile so I find they turn faster then other brands.

I ran a set of Pirelli Diablo Corsa Rosso II's and got good mileage and stonking performance on track as well, just expect them to last all 7 of your trackdays!  :tongue3:

Has anyone tried the Pirelli Corsa BSB tyre? It is primarily a road sports tyre that is said to perform very well on track, any experiences? I have use the OEM Bridgestones both on the new ZX6r and new ZX10r - I have been surprised just how good the OEM tyres perform on the circuits. I have habitually used Racetecs for track days  - never let go on me and I have had good mileage out of them on circuit, mainly due to good working pressures and suspension set up. Equally I have used them on the road during summer and they have been a good road tyre too.  The OEM tryes however give a far more precise feel on track but with that comes a "finer" feel that could be limited grip. I have never felt grip was likely to let go with the Racetecs however I have little confidence in them when it is damp. For road and track I'd go for the Bridgestones OEM tyres.

ive only had 2 sets of tyres on the 10R first were pirelli corsa III's and dunlop sportsmarts the differance is unbelieveable though the corsa's were very uninspiring confidence wise and i could never really tell what was going on with them, very poor feedback when tipped into a bend and dont even get me started on them in the wet, when it was dry and they were warm they did have a shed load of grip but i didnt feel i could really push them too hard as with the lack of feedback there didnt seam to be a warning that you were approaching the limit u just got right up to the limit with loads of grip and then they would give up, having spoken to my brother who used to do short circuit racing he mentioned he never rode pirelli slicks as they were the same more outright grip then a lot of tyres but if you tried to push just a lil bit more then there limit ud be in the gravel

the sportsmarts are great loads of feedback and they feel happier when lent over then they do upright ridden with em all over the place including a germany trip and 2 laps of the ring and they still have loads of grip left and after a perticulalry rain soaked session out in germany and still making some rather rapid progress with maybe 1 or 2 lil rider error hic-ups, but they still gave me enough grip to scrub off speed (panic brake) and make it around the corner (tip it in and pray), id have no issues taking them out on even the wettest day

I had SportSmarts on my zx7r, and they are a great tyre. I was even able to push it hard with the rear punctured in order to get to a garage fast, and once there the hot rear had just 17psi in it. But that is why I've never bought any more, every bike I've fitted Dunlop to has been plagued with punctures.
