Never ran an engine in by the book before, never will

Engines are run in before you've even got to the bike, no manufacturer would let any engine leave the factory without having tested it first

The run in periods are more designed for the rider to get used to the bike before you start to open it up

but if you're ever in doubt, gas it

Ive seen a Faser 6.. the thunder cat engined one blow on first day of ownership..bought in the morning thrashed till that afternoon then bang.

As far as run in at factory.. yes... its gets a power test which will be something like.. does it make 100 hp in fourth at 8k revs for tens seconds..manufactures dont have time to waste playing around with thousands of engines.

I think if by running it in the way kwak say to.. was creating slow bikes or bikes that burned lots of oil because of poor ring to barrel seating.. their break in policy would be totally different..All bike makers give the same advice no matter what style of bike or engine CC..I believe they give the advice they are sure is best for you.

Its clear though that both ways can work.. so you can run your bike in.. safe in the knowledge that a bit of abuse will do it no harm from new.. but one engine in one bike can be better than another..tighter or looser say and its to allow for differences in the manufacturing process that you go through a run in procedure..just in case.

So I take the middle path I ride my bike with a bit of mechanical sympathy but i dont fuss about it and  a few hundred miles come around quickly anyway. :icon_thumright:

Well I brought the bike home last night and have started riding it how I will normally.
Felt nice and with full power selected was rapid.

I'm still being caring towards the engine and drive train until I get the 1st service done and then with fresh oil I'll ride it harder and enjoy it.

Does the bike have a slipper clutch as standard??

All ZX10R's have slipper clutches

the 04 ZX10R was the first bike to have a slipper clutch of the shelf iirc :icon_thumleft:

Not up to speed with current "run in" manufacturers reasons why, last new bike i bought was in 2004. Not sure how true it is but was told that from the factory they add a slightly different spec of oil to aid initial bedding in of bits .. possibly a load of bull, and maybe someone in the know could confirm this .... but at the end of the day, i don't think there is anything to be gained by not sticking to what the manufacturer recommends, but maybe something to loose if it blows to bits and the electronics has stored data that proves you didn't run it in as recommended and a warranty claim is thrown out !

Ive read somewhere about running in oils on some other bikes but i dont know if that applies to ZX10r..
And with the level of electronics today would anyone be surprised if the run in was stored..
Pure guess..i'd fall in with the probably not for both these points but why take a chance.. what really is there to lose by sticking to ball park figures of factory run in advice.
