SHELL WANKERS
« on: June 16, 2012, 07:40:38 AM »

Just been to the local Shell garage and the manager has put up a sign saying all headgear to be removed before pump will be activated. Wanker! Sent the following email to Shell
Hello, I recently went to my regular Shell garage on Abbey road Barrow-in-Furness, to find a noticed displayed saying all HEADgear must be removed prior to the pump being activated. Does this apply to all headgear? Being a regular user and VPower member I find it disgusting that you expect me to remove a crash helmet just so I can purchase your product. The inconveniece caused is terrible and degrading even more so when it is raining and in full wet gear. I will be watching to see if people with cap, hats or religious garb have to adhere to the same rules.

Unfortunately I will be taking me custom elsewhere until this crazy rule is removed.

Got this reply
Thank you for your email regarding your visit at Shell Lakeland. I
appreciate the opportunity to address this issue with you.

Under the licensing laws, we are required to take all reasonable
steps to establish that a person attempting to operate the petrol
dispensing system or purchase petrol is over the age of 16. If the
face of the customer is obscured, the staff have been trained to
request the customer to uncover their face in order to do a visual
check to determine is the customer is of the required minimum age, or
ask for proof of age. If the Customer Assistant did not do this, they
could be guilty of a serious criminal offence.

In additon, we respect female customers' right to wear face coverings
for religious reasons and would check their age by asking to see
their documents, if the CA was in doubt. A religious hijab or burqa
is not comparable to a motorcycle helmet

So replied back this and now awaiting a reply
Thats all cool but surely to drive a car or motorcycle you have to be over 16. It is not the fact that a motorcycle helmet is comparable to a burka which I fully understand, but you have contradicted yourself by saying to enable th pump to be authorised the CA need to be sure the customer is over 16. If people can be asked at the desk after dispensing why not motor cyclist.

My local garage started doing this after suffering with lots of drive off's without paying and also after being robbed and one of their cashiers being seriously injured by someone wearing a crash helmet. They also won't activate the pumps at night without paying first, and that applies to cars as well.

They know me so i don't have to, but to be honest it wouldn't bother me taking my helmet off, its no big deal and i always take it off at petrol stations and shops that don't me, rather than make the cashier feel intimidated or at danger when i go in to pay.

Two sides to every story. I can see why some petrol stations feel the need to do this and respect their wishes and right to do so, or if i don't agree with something, just go elsewhere.

Reading the letter from Shell, them saying about asking for proof of age at the desk, for certain customers, doesn't say this will done after the pump has been activated ??

I can see why it might be a slight inconvience to remove but to get upset at the fact of having to remove your helmet it a little OTT to be fair esp the degrading bit  :dontknow:

when you pull up for fuel you remove your gloves surely? 10 secs later your lid is off and you can get fuel, I dont know about anyone else its a fecking pain in the arse trying to fill up with your lid on anyways, the filler is usually obscured with the chin piece of my lid so have to lean back to see where to put my key

not a problem for me, yes it might be to see how old you are but I bet its more to do with people driving off and not paying, with a helmet on you cant get a clear face shot to give to the police, that may not be your problem but the business has to take steps to protect its sales and thats fair enough

Sometimes you just want to fill up and go. Another downside to removing your helmet is the risk of damaging it whilst carrying it, along with keys, wallet, gloves etc, not to mention having to put it on the diesel soaked floor whilst filling up. Its less of a worry for those with cheap helmets, but if I dropped my RX7 because some school-age cashier thinks that someone younger than him/her could be riding around on a ZX10R wearing 2 grands worth of helmet & clothing, i'd want to burn the place to the ground. Why don't they check everyones licence and insurance, plus a valid MOT certificate where applicable, before letting people draw fuel...

never had to put my lid on the floor or dropped it ever filling up, most filling pumps have a ledge to put stuff on

guess its each to their own at the end of the day

there are plenty worse things in life to get so upset about tho  [rofl]

Not everywhere, mostly at supermarkets, and who'd put supermarket fuel in a ZX10r?
