Reducing overall noise outout from race bike
« on: March 28, 2012, 01:28:20 AM »

Had an issue racing in the NBC at the weekend at Zolder where we were black flagged for our bike being a few dB over the ride-by limit (of 95dB).
Our GSXR600K1 runs a standard exhaust system and when driving hard past noise-meter 1 was fine. Noise meter 2 is in an area where throttle may be transitioning from fully open to part-closed/closed into a braking area. We failed at this point twice...but strangely only with a specific rider onboard. Other riders of the bike didn't have a problem all race.
We suspect that the problem may be the induction noise rather than exhaust noise an a different riding style (gear/throttle/line)...but we are going to investigate everything anyway.

Anyone got any sensible suggestions as to how to reduce the induction noise on bikes? Our thoughts so far are along the lines of going back to a standard air filter, surrounding airbox/covering underside of tank and fairings with sound-dampening materials. Any other ideas?

We do have a noise meter available so can measure the difference each step makes (if any).

Cheers
