999 ducati rating

Been offered a 999 ducati.
1, how do I know what spec it is. I know they made 2 types a low spec and top spec.
2, what the power like, I've had a tlr in the past
3, will it be slow to my zx10r
It's a 04 anything to look out for. Other than service etc

They did a 999, Biposto, R, S.  I think they did an SP but are a real rarity and often came in Race Rep (Xerox) colours.

A lot of people may have replaced some parts of the lesser models to make them look like the S's or R's so beware.

Base model have Showa forks and rear shock but the S and R models have Ohlins.  However the Showa standard forks are pretty damn good and fully adjustable compared to other Jap OEM crap.

Brakes are 4 pot Brembo's (say no more) which will stop you on a 10p.  Only difference is the R and S models have fully floating discs.

Bit of a diet in the R & S models too as are about 3-4Kg lighter than standard model.

If you want to take pillion the BiPosto is the model or ensure the bike comes with seat conversion (Single to Double)

No single sided swingarm (which is why purists never like the 999 or 749) but does make it easier for garage and maintenance.

The easiest comparison is not to your 10R but to a 750.  But with oodles more torque.  You can ride the Duke all day in 2nd/3rd as it will pull from everywhere.  They are around the 130Bhp mark...

The new 848 has more power than the 999 but less ooomph.

Hard work at slow speed, as any heavy duke is, but once moving make total sense and really flow.  Throttle can be a bit on or off in low gears.

Full Service history is a must, and must have had the timing / cam belts done regular.  A big bill usually follows any Duke service so if its due for one, haggle.

For me...I would snap someones arm off for one of these.  I totally love them and for me, any Ducati bike is the one I would have in the garage over anything else.  Nothing short of Bike Porn!!!

Don't think so...the S and R definately have Ohlins....two good riding buddies have both and both are kitted within Ohlins.  Only the Base 999 had Showa.

My last bike was a rsvr edwards. By all accounts a reliable italian bike, it may have been a mutt, but it was enough to teach me italian bikes are not up to the build quality of the japs, specially the electrics.

must bbe the 749 S that has the Showa then. I ssit corrected.

Dukes are more reliable when they are used frequently, if left sitting around then faults develop. Also the cam belts form a "memory" when they've been sitting around  the pulleys for a long time so get em changed regardless of mileage

Your choice, but not for me, the 999's not a looker :pottytrain2:.  Had an Aprili Factory before the ZX10R, yes, only thing that let it down was electrics - German Bosch shite! [wall]  You can't beat Jap reliability.  Plus, 4 seconds a lap quicker at Cadwell last week on the 10 :icon_thumleft:

How spooky is this....RiDE magazine this month (new edition popped on my door mat this morning) has a buying guide for the 749/999 but focusing on 999.  Great read.
