I renewed mine about 6 months ago, you have to pay anyway, but on the form you have to return I just "ticked the box" to say I had lost the photo card part and returned the paper part.

Just photocopy it or scan it and keep the copy of it before you return anything to the DVLA.

If you do take a photocopy you need someone of standing within the community to sign it as proof that it is a recent photocopy, i know it sounds stupid, but with passing my car test in may that is what the DVLA advised me to do, to ensure it wasnt lost. So i had my photocopy signed by driving instructor and the dvla lady behind the desk, as proof. hope it helps

There was a case made the news about 18 months back where a police mechanic had his entitlement erroneously removed by the DVLA .....even with affidavits from the senior police officers at the station (who had obviously inspected his licence to allow him to ride police bikes) the DVLA would not give the entitlement back and the guy had to do another bike test.....

The ONLY sure way is to retain your current licence, claim it is lost and wait for the replacement to come through.

If there is any discrepancy then, the DVLA will accept the original licence (that you just "found") as proof.

Visiting Swansea with it would then be the sensible method - otherwise they can "lose" that as well ....
