Agree with most of the suggested routes. However, one thing though, is not to under-estimate how big Scotland is. That weather map you see on the telly belies it's scale and petrol stops tend to thin out a bit the further north you go. Venture up through Glencoe, Fort William, Inverness, Ullapool and beyond, you'll be stunned by the scenery and quality of the roads. Go the whole hog and ride along the top towards Bettyhill, Thurso and John O'Groat's and you'll have felt you've done a tour de ecosse some justice. Along the top, some roads become single track with passing places but generally they are well surfaced. Most of the posh sports car magazines venture up to the north west to "road test" the latest expensive sports cars due to the relative lack of traffic and quality of the roads. I stopped for a pish at a layby just south of Loch Ness last week and saw a procession of Lamborgini, Ferrari, Porsche heading northwards. (slowly as they were stuck behind a tour bus )

Midges are not too bad at the moment probaby due to late season changes, however Avon Skin So Soft lotion works wonders apparently. Worst place I know for midges is the Red Squirrel camp site in Glencoe. Good pub though and used as a base for hillwalkers. When the weather is good, you will not beat Scotland for scenery. If it rains......and the midges come out....it's wee dram time...............Enjoy och aye the noo..........

I agree re. Red Squirrel camp site, been there a few times. Which pub do you mean, the Clachaig ? A decent pint of "real" swally can be had there.

Ah man,  real Scottish history, better and more tragic than the Hollywood/Mel Gibson version!   Midges up there have you scratching all over.......wee feckers.

As said before the road  between the mountains down to Eilen donnan Castle and on to Skye is awsome. But if you go further north fill up with fuel whenever you can as petrol stations are few and far between. Try the Fife coast for a change as its not so obvious for tourists . have a great time

It's 2 or 3 years since I was "up" there. I'm origionaly from SW Scotland, Dumfriesshire, but moved out to Southern Spain 2 yrs ago so it might be a wee while before I go again !  

The last time a few of us went "for a run" it was mid morning on a Sat and we ended up in Oban via Loch Lomond and Glen Coe, Clachaig. Had a "wee swally" there and, as I say, ended up in Oban. So....... decided to stay the night and had a "big swally".  

On the Sunday we went back via Callander and Stirling. Not bad for, what was meant to be, a "run".
