I thought the rationale was usually because the bike was a category B (or worse) write off.

Those categories should never be put back on the road so removing the identification should prevent any chance of re-registration.

Of course, there are other reasons for hiding a bikes identity as others have mentioned!

loads of reasons why a bike has no frame number , no F/N does`nt really matter but no engine number = stolen

If a bike has no frame no's at all it could be a new frame was fitted, this would be a track or race bike as, insurance will write off a bike with any frame damage, not rebuild it with a new frame.

I had a stolen recovered with receipts and an insurance statement which had the last 4 digits stamped out with X's but had to change it as wasnt allowed to race it, however if I'd changed the frame to a new one ie no numbers I could, the reason is the engine no's were intact.

As liam says if the engine no's are tampered with then definite no go but if no frame no's but engine no's ok could be another reason other than stolen, or written off

Now this prob doesnt mean anything but it had the keys and alarm fob so if it was/is stolen they have done it with taking the keys lol

We buy various bikes CAT B will have or should have digits removed or frame number some salvage companys dont remove but ask for the cut headstock to be sent back... X ray does not show the remainder of the letters as they only go 2mm into the frame at the most as frames are now alloy any more would compromise the structure of the frame so a grinder makes them not visible even by x ray ...

We also brought a CAT D stolen recovered with tampered numbers main dealer by law are not allowed to re-stamp stamped frames they can only stamp a fresh frame (new) . This bike was sold with a certificate from police and salvage company to say the bike was perfectly legal to ride as is and would be recorded with DVLA so if ever stopped it would be on record.
