  My friend is wanting to learn to ride , and is already set his sights on a super sport  bike like a cbr 600 rr.

a 50 or 125 is the norm if he's only learning to ride  [whistle]

Is he gonna do direct access ? then buy a bike like the one mentioned ? if he takes the test on a 125 they would be restricted any way , if thats the case a 400 would be the best bet and move on to bigger cc's after.
at least that way they would gain some skills etc .

I work in a bike shop and am amazed at the number of people coming in for gear having just passed their direct access test, then gone and bought themselves a shiny new GSXR1000 or Fireblade etc.

Often these people have never ridden bikes ever in their lives, but because their mate who's been riding for a few years has one they have to have one too

I'm all for freedom of choice but when does that stop and stupidity begin? The phrase learn to walk before you run springs to mind. Start with something less powerful and more forgiving and build up your roadcraft and experience. After all, experience can only be learned, not taught.

I dont think I'd ever recommend anyone get bigger than a 600cc to start with, and even then I'd say go for an older model, like a CBR600F or early ZX6R's. quick enough to have fun with, but no so bonkers as a 750/1000 of a newer version.

I say let the lad get what he wants its his money.  Just because he want's an RR doesnt mean he's gonna be an idiot on it without any respect for his own or others safety.   Also i reckon if he does make a mistake on a set of twisties it wont matter what he's on be it a cbr 600rr or a 400 the outcome would be the same.      :icon_thumright:

Don't forget manufacturer's don't produce those excellent 250/400's that they did in the late 80's and 90's any more either  [wall]
