Penalty Points
« on: May 20, 2009, 11:41:08 AM »

A friend of mine has just received an SP30. They did have a clean licence before hand. They are in a moral dilema now. Declare to insurance or not. They know a lot of people who don't declare speeding convictions. Does 1 SP30 really make that much difference anyway I'd ask ?

What are peoples views on this.

declare it else at pay out time the contract could be viewed as void and it won't affect premium for most companies as an sp30 is a nothing in the scheme of things

where as it might not create a void policy it could create delays in payout and unecessary stress in my opinion

you'd think that the insurance companies would validate licence details with dvla anyhow surely  :dontknow:

Knowing those with points (more than 1 who has not declared) this does surprise me.

So it is most likely unless an insurance company asked for your licence they would never know. Thats how people get away with it, though I wouldn't like to take the risk, just in case some thing happens.

Had an SP30 a few years ago , didn't make any diffirence to my ins premium.
Tell your mate to inform his ins or come time to make a claim  he could loose out totally .

I would declare them...but would be surprised if the premiums went up.  Most people have 3 points minimum now.  I know when I got done last New Year when I told my insurance company they said it didn't make any difference.

I did hear a while back, and not sure if this was accurate, you only need to declare at renewal as they premium you pay is reflective of the time of inception.  Otherwise technically, our insurance would always be changing based on market premiums etc.  Also, when you take insurance out it calculates it based on the age at your next birthday for this exact reason.

I think they would only not pay out if was shown you didn't declare at the time of buying the  insurance you had points.  As that would constitute Fraud.

May be worth checking the small print of the insurance and seeing what it says.

I know modifications are seen slightly different as its seen a changing the risk category for the cover so could nullify the insurance. But not sure if this applies to drivers information.

When I claimed after I wrote my car off a few years back I had to show them my licence & paper counterpart & I know other people that have had to do the same when claiming.
