you remember the dutch guy that joined here a while back saying he was gonna get a 636??, well he finally passed his test and decided e doesnt have enuff money so he has been offered a 2003 bmw 1200RS at a very very good price. 

I have been trying to tell him he would be an idiot to ride something like that for his first bike even putting aside the fact it is a bmw.

His argument is that he is a very responsible driver(no comment) and that he will not push the bike to the limit,

my argument, its not about pushing the bike to the limit thats the problem its when you think everything going fine at a low speed that something happens and it bites you big time in the ass, if you have no experience of this you will never recover it on a bike that size.

Now am i jsut being a big girls blouse or is the guy being an idiot (not in the fact he wants a bmw which goes without saying)

how tall is he for a start, might sound a silly question but if he's quite tall and pretty well built then i guess the size of the bike doesnt matter

but regarless of his size i wouldnt recommend a 1200cc bike as a first bike, yes i know its a bmw gs1200 but still a 1200

would of said a 600cc bike would of been a better bike to learn to ride on, i know they are fast but they are also a little more forgiving im my opinion

I dont think the size of the bike will make much of a difference if he drives within his limits , when something goes wrong a large part of it is down to luck wether you can recover it or not , yes there is no question that expierence counts in these situations but there are so many outside factors than can contribute that even a seasoned rider could find him/her self in trouble .
 600 cc bike these days are capabile of balistic speed , perhaps lighter and more managable in some respects to bigger heavier bikes but still just as likely to bite you in the ass if you are being stupid or riding outwith your comfort zone.
so i would say if thats going to be his first bike then crack on and as you get more expierence your skills will grow as will your confidence and in turn you will be able to explore more of the bike and what it and you can do , dont just jump on and think you can ride like a moto gp rider.

ummmmm 1200cc for yea first bike.........its gona be fun 

you will never know how he can handle it or not,,but just a little slip of the rite hand at low speed can end up with the back end spinning up and him in a pile of dust on the car park,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,stuff like that is always down to experience ..............he will learn the hard way......

Its a very capable bike and very easy to ride once on the move. Its also less likely to "pressure" him into ballistic riding.
When you think about it, its probably a very good choice of first bike as long as he isnt 5ft 3" and 9 stone!

just because its 1200cc really dose`nt mean anything, some harleys are 1200cc but there shit slow!
as long as he feels comfortable with the size and weight of the bike they why not?

there a very good bike and easy to get on with, i would even say easier than a 636

Not necessarily. If he realises his limitations and rides within his skill levels theres no reason why he should crash at all!

dont think it matters what size the engine is to be honest, at the end of it a 600cc will take you up too 100mph just as quick as a 1200 and if you fall off either its going to bloody hurt! its not how fast it goes its how easy it is too control and i reckon a 1200rs is proberbly as easy as most although ive never riden one.

A bit of weight is a good thing when it comes to making a bike easy to ride.
