The 'ring!
« on: February 17, 2009, 10:41:49 PM »

Ok, so Ive just booked on this years site trip to Germany with Wheeltrax, which includes a trip to the 'ring and I must admit I can't wait to get over there.  :headbang:

Been riding for many years now and just turned 40 and have to say my track experience is limited to a few days at Knockhill, most of them being wet.  A wee bit nervous about the ride around the famous circuit but I know I'll be fine once I get rolling.

Been watching some of the utube vids on the ring and the best advice out there seems to be ride at your own pace and treat the track as if your were riding a fast road...........................................................or should I just turn up and nail it.  :emb:
Anyone got any ripping yarns from their first trip to the Nurburgring??

Oh, I think I may be the only Jock on the trip, I know most of the rest are from Engerlund, would be nice if there was an ambassador from all the home nations, then we could have some friendly banter/competition on the go.   :occasion14:

if possible m8 tag on the tail of some1 that knows it.....follow their lines

otherwise think you pretty well nailed it by saying treat as a long twisty rd and stay within your comfort zone

hardly any run off area...armco for most of it so mistakes are punished  :-(

i had the benefit of following brendan rnd..runs sliders guest house, also known as pb's 'barron' and ring lap record holder so followed his lines

if a blonde bird in a porche gt3 comes behind you pipping her horn dont try and keep up with her....its that bird that drove the trani van rnd there for top gear...cant rem her name...lol

dont know if we have any 'ring' experienced guys among us...i've done it ....9 min lap...but would never profess to knowing it

amazing place that you will enjoy  :occasion14:

Yep. reckon your right Topher, I'll just tag onto someone who has better knowledge. I'm sure Kev from Wheeltrax will keep us rookies right but any good advice before setting of is a bonus so thanks for the info.  :icon_thumright:

There must be a few pretty experienced and knowlegable guys on the site now. Maybe we should have an 'Ask the Expert' section for specific tracks, rides, bike issues etc.  :icon_thumright:

Cheers.

Theres quite a few posts on the ring giving advice is you use the search function.

the general things tho

1/ if the stewards think your exhaust is too loud don't expect to get on the track that day unless u get a baffle or something
2/all the corners that bikes regularly crash on have signs before them with a pic of a crashing bike on it so just take it easy on that.
3/ the carrosel (the wall type thing you go round) is easier to actually hit it and go round properly than try and ride the road around it
4/you can get prossecuted for driving like a dick (not that i think anyone here would do that)
5/keep an eye in your mirrors for cars, indicate and move right to let them past
6/dont get drawn in to going at more than your own pace, there are very few run offs and a few streight dives into a concrete wall
7/only do one lap at a time and take 10 mins to chat about it with your mates giving you and your bike a bit of time to cool off before atacking again
8/There are markers(white paint blobs) on most of the corners put there by the race schools that tell you where to turn in and where the apex is, keep an eye out for them, they are placed for cars but work for bikes.

Finally the same as any riding, dont bottle it mid corner

p.s the lass's name is sabine, you prob won't see her there tho cause she stopped going much after she was on top gear, got a bit more famous and a bit pissed off with everyone wanting to meet her, But if you really must meet her you can book her to take you round in the ring taxi :)

and john if i am very lucky i will see you guys at the ring so u wont be the only skirt wearer  [rofl] [rofl]

Good advice, cheers for that. No. 5 will be the hardest one, letting the cars past.
My mate who was there last year said he was passed by more cars than bikes.  :emb:
Cheers, hope to see you there.

its no a case of letting them past, the tracks wide enuff to allow easy passing so the dudes in the gt3's who are there all the time will just blaze past yoou its just that not everyones quite as good as they are so safer to just move to the side :)
