Camera Mount
« on: February 02, 2009, 11:55:33 AM »

Got a camcorder or a normal Digicam with video function?
Wanna use it on the bike but dont know how to attach it securely?
Got a bulletcam and want some more mounting options?

Then read on....

There is a firm in the States selling mounts call "Sticky Pods". Brilliant idea, brilliant product but tooooo much money for my liking.
http://www.stickypod.com/

So, there I am one day thinking "Well it cant be that difficult to knock one up".
So I decided to give it a go.

The parts I used were just what I had lying around and if I were doing it again Id try to source some better stuff (bigger suction cups and a more upmarket swivel mount). As a prototype though Im very pleased with it.
Im going to attach the mount complete with Camcorder to the side of the car when I go in to town late for a shakedown test. Should be interesting (I ALWAYS secure my cameras with a lanyard when on a vehicle as a safety net).

There may be the possibility of me going in to production with these but, as I said, with better components.
See what you think:

Ive tested the mount and all I can say is...... IT STICKS!

Very pleased with it. Mounted it with the camcorder from the pics (quite heavy as camcorders go these days) on the outside of my car. Tried it in two places. Firstly on the side window and then on the door. When I tried it on the door I positioned it where the metal curves quite drastically in to the bottom of the window. A more severe curve than any bike side fairing that I can think of. Only managed to get up to 70mph (tin boxes eh?) but I did throw an emergency stop in for good measure. Getting it on a bike is the next logical step but I really cant see it being a problem at all. Ive tried probably half a dozen different mounts in the past (if not more) and so far this out performs them all. It not only sticks like a bstd its so easy to use that its childs play. No fiddling at all. Once the double linkage camera mount is tightened up in the right position you could more or less throw it at your bike and it'd stick!

Not sure what they would cost once Ive tracked down suppliers for all the component parts but I've set myself a ceiling of 30 quid

Have done some filming with the mount today.....
One word - INCREDIBLE!

Stable as you like. Even over a (not so) level crossing. Nothing fazed it.

Short vid clip to follow...

Had to hold off on the vid clip with the weather being so shite.  :-(
Managed to test it however and Im convinced of the product.

Im currently tracking down suppliers for the parts but I wanted to check something out.

HELP REQUIRED PLEASE
The height to the bottom of the camera (from the tank for instance) is currently 95mm.
Is this high enuff?

Ive checked it on my Bandit and the pic on the viewfinder seems fine (just shows the very top of the clocks)  but I could do with feedback from ppl with other machines as well.
ZX10R (natch)
Blade
R1
and any others that you guys may have in the garage.

If you get a spare minute hold the camera level at approx 95mm above the tank and let me know if you have a clear shot thro the screen/over the clocks.
I think a lot of ppl would use this mount on the side fairing as it gives spectacular shots but obviously top of the tank is a fav as well.

Thanks in advance of your replies  :icon_thumleft:

doesn't sound like alot.

My GoPro Wide has a bottom of the camera to the base of the mount (ie; top of the tank) variable between 90mm and 150mm ....

So far had two bikes checked for height. Bandit 1200s and a Triumph 955i Daytona. Both are fine.
The daytona had the screen lip half way thro the pic at 95mm so would actually have to lower it from 95mm to see directly thro the screen with no annoying "half n half" scenario.

-- AT LAST!!!--

I have been testing like mad and finally got round to producing a sample clip.

Camera mounts are now in production either to buy or borrow whilst on tour with me and they work like a dream!
Simple, stable and secure they even stay steady over a cobbled hump back bridge (as seen towards the end of this video clip)...

Oh, and BTW they've been tested at speeds in excess of 140MPH  :angel12:

More clips to follow...
