rusty chain`
« on: March 03, 2007, 03:29:22 PM »

my chain started to get a little rusty. think its only surface rust, but wanted to know whats the best way to remove the rust, clean the cahin, and keep it clean.

at the moment, i put the bike ona paddock stand, and chain lube it, but its still a bit rusty.

if i remove it to clean it properly, can i get a new link, to join it up, and where from.....

the final one is, are them clip on chain cleaner thingies any good ( the one with all the cogs and brushes in)

cheers fellasm :icon_thumright:

I try to use the Catrol chain wax stuff on the side plates to keep the surface rust at bay,

prob best using something that won't damage the seals like this

then just a bit of soft wire wool to clean anything left off then oil it up  :icon_thumright:

I use Wurth brake and chain cleaner. Cleans the plates, but if there is rust, just put LOADS of lube on and hope the dirt sticks and hides the rust.

well to clear rust I waould get a small wire brush and some GT85 or GT40 and just spray on and give a bloody good srub, clean chain and dry. If needed do all over again. Then when finished use any good aftermarket chain lube. Best time to apply is after a ride when chain is warm and sray on inside if chain as centerfugal force will force lube into links when riding..

Dave's been trying that old trick with his whole bike for years to hide the dirt I reckon   [whistle]    [rofl] [rofl] [rofl]

I just get some metal or chain degreasant and spary on and then scrub the chain good and proper with a firm toothbrush, then coat well with chain lube.

I usally do this very carefully with the bike on the paddock stand with it in 1st gear on tickover so the chain is running. Only do this if youre not a complete mechanical numpty :!:

 :iamwithstupid:

Scotch pads - those green kitchen scourer thingeys also work well for cleaning surface rust off of steel. ACF 50 is an option to apply to the side plates if you want to prevent corrosion.

I like to use parafin or diesel to clean the whole chain while it's on the bike - apply with a paint brush and get all the crud out - just make sure you've put loads of newspaper on the floor to soak up the mess.... That way there'll be an oily film left after you dry it - do this once every 2 months or so and you'll prolong the life of your chain, as that crud acts like grinding paste.
