Do you need to crash to get ok/comfortable/safe at wheelies?
« on: September 28, 2008, 12:14:10 PM »

?

Been umming and arring at trying to start wheelying on my 10 but REALLY don't want to ruin my pride and joy

Question is, in real world terms, and i know every rider is different etc but, are you going to come off if you start practicing wheelies with clutch up technique?? Realistically, do you need to crash a few times on the journey to become good at wheelying?  :dontknow:

touch wood, i have never crashed on one yet, almost always on the clutch altho occassionally power fora lazy.  I personally thing its easier to flip the bike doing power wheelies, also dont try in first its easy to get up but easy to flip as well

Just take it slow and steady - like 2 or 3 years of gentle practice.

I only use the "off/on the power" technique - with a the ZX10r it's easy. I first started with fast getaways from the light's making the front go light, then progressed onto giving it deliberately large handfuls of power over crests in first or second gear. After that, coasting at 7k and off/on - weeeee - up it comes !!!

You need to get to a stage where you're not shitting yourself everytime the front comes up - which took me about a year.

After that, it'll just develop.

I'm now at the stage where I need to master changing gears while up - which I think will come next year - I can almost change the gear now, but every time I do the front goes down, I don't know how the biek will react when I gas it on in second - I think I'll be back to the "shitting myself" stage.

I've not crashed yet - but clearly it's a dangerous pastime.

An added benefit (if you can call it that) is that you don't panic when the front comes up unexpectedly - like powering through the gears on Welsh A roads when it comes up at 130mph, where argueably it's not the best time to panic unduely - just calmly shift your weight forward and try to land it before you hit the mountain.

I'm still learning and i used the roll on roll off to get used to the front coming up. As FT said  practice, i started 4 years ago on my old TL1000S  and its only now that i can start to hit the balance point. Although today i had a proud moment and clutched up in 2nd!

I learnt to power wheelie to the balance point after a few weeks. I've been wheeling for two months now and the since last week can clutch up in 2nd and hold to rev limit every time if there's space... don't seem to have a problem. But I would try about 100 to 300 wheelies a day whilst learning. I would be out for hours every night. Even in the wet I would power wheelie. I have nearly flipped a few times though. You must cover that rear brake! Started small and built up. Now its happens every time with out even thinking about it.  :icon_thumright: loads of practice  :icon_thumright:

:iamwithstupid: wheelies are fantastic when executed properly and controlled. but they do hurt and are dangerous  :emb:. whatever technique you choose, ALWAYS cover the back brake. have fun
