A little competition today

Flitwick motorcycles ran a free dyno sessin today. So a few of us went along to see what it was all about.
For those that don't know Flitwick is a Yam dealership. So My zx10 '07 goes on gets a result 166.76 the top for most of the day my worry was now EXJ10R's bike as it is the same bike same age to the day just green. Jason's sees 163 FAZTZX10R '08 .....173 :shock:

SO the final result for the day was:

1st; Fastzx10R '08 @173
2nd; Shongy's '07 @ 166
3rd; EXJR's @ 163

How ever there was another bike which I suppose should be mentioned. A R1 Superstock bike belonging to Ollie Lindsell. At the end of the day the shop couldn't have a Kwack win the dyno shoot out so they wheel out the R1, warm it up and put it on the dyno.........we all wait.....the sound is smooth and sweet sounding.........and it puts out ...........166.


So the '08 Kwack is one heluva a bike. :headbang:

God I'm glad I own a 10r :headbang:

Yeah had a real good afternoon,thought the weather was going to fook it all up but ended up nice and sunny and a good crowd turned out,it was good to see the 08 was putting out good power at 173.37(you forgot the .37 shong)and it had a nice power curve and max torque was 81.69@8779.4rpm so i was happy with that,i fitted a new piper X filter yesterday and it did feel a lot better,so lads that own 08 10r's get your self one.One thing i will say though is it dont matter how much our 10r's put out bhp wise its who rides them that counts so dont worry about the bhp,i'm sure we have all been there on our track time when the bloke on the fucked up gsxr600 tucks up the inside of you and fucks you up,at the end of the day you could have a 200bhp superbike but if you cant ride that sort of bike its no good to you. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

 :iamwithstupid: but I gotta say I am suited to 160bhp ....... I like having to thing about not using all the power to quick and knowing I got loads left.....

think 200bhp would be to much for me though  :emb:

Totally agree on the power thing but at least it shows Kawasaki are not completely lying about the increase for the 08.

one good thing about my 10 is the way the power comes in,i've had all the gsxr1000's from the k1 upto the k5 and they always felt intimidating to ride because of the way the power was from low down,even my 05 zx10r was the same,in the end i bought a 04 r6 just for trackdays and i was quicker on that than my 1000's.But this new 08 is fantastic and it feels like a 600 untill you get to 7000rpm then all hell breaks loose,so it means out of the bends you can really get the power down rather than worrying about the rear spinning up and sending you to highside city,not that im saying it wont happen its just i think it would be a bit harder to do.Cant wait to do snetterton in a couple of weeks to see what times i can do on my new 10. :occasion14:

well I apologize before hand if I'm talking outta my ass, I havent researched the changes to the '08 at all. However torque, especially on small displacement motors is a product of port velocity. The '06 design benefitted by smaller ports and valves, because in doing so they amplified the engines vacuum by decreasing the port size. Vacuum doesnt change but reducing the amount of room the vacuum has to operate within, increases the "suction" of the motor, moving more air at virtually all engine speeds. This method was adopted on the '06 because the increased port velocity increased power on the motor enough to outweigh the flow numbers for the '05 with its larger volume head design.

My assumption (again sorry I havent researched) is that the '08 has larger ports, valves, or lift similar to the '05 motor, but as the similar torque figures show, they were able to maintain a similar flow on the low end to the '06 while making the '08 larger lift design do what it does natively, flow big numbers up top. The slightly higher peak tq for the '08 indicates this as well. As our '06 ports start to gasp for more the '08 opens up and finds another gear.

Could it not simply be down to minor changes in gearing?

bhp in = bhp out (so power at the engine = power at the wheels). Not strictly true because of losses, but a good mnemonic when you remember...
- Torque in does not equal torque out. It is always factored by the gearing

It's all down to revs mate

horsepower equals torque (in ft-pounds) times RPM divided by 5250
