Nurburgring Safety Vid
« on: May 21, 2008, 06:34:16 AM »

Everybody at some point wants to ride the Nurburgring.
What most people mean is the "Nordschleife" or Northern Loop. This is the part which is 13 mls long and you pay per lap.

Everyone has heard the horrow stories about "The Ring" being a dangerous place.
It is......... if you try to ride it like a normal short circuit. Its also HEEEUUUUGE fun!

With cars, coaches and bikes out there all at the same time plus the technical demands of the place (1000 feet height variance and 73 bends per lap for starters!) it takes some getting used to. One of the biggest suprises is the speed of the cars compared to bikes. If your not a ring regular YOU WILL GET PASSED BY CARS.
Very impressive what some of those Novas can do  :emb:.

Its a sooooooopurb place to ride. I live an hour away from the place and take guys there on tour all the time.
If you want to do the ring there are some basics you need to know.
The Nurburgring company have recently produced a safety video (not exactly rock n roll but it does cover a few important points) and some kind soul has nicked it for youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HND1_lov_BI

IMPORTANT: If your taking your bike abroad it is ESSENTIAL that you carry a "European Health Insurance Card".
Have it with you at ALL times. Thats on your person. Not in a tankbag for instance.

There was a guy came off his bike on the ring (ouch) last year and what was the marshalls first question?
Are you alright? Does it hurt anywhere?
Nope. Where is your EHIC?
Seriously, I dont think they would have moved him (even with 2 broken vertibrae) without it!

Have posted this before but well worth another mention for anyone thinking of going to the ring www.nurburgring.org.uk Fantastic site written by a guy who has made 53 trips from England to the ring. Am with Glenn on this one sooooooooo wanna ride it and would give it serious thought if there was a trip organised via the forum. But will have to be next year tho, will take that long to sell it to the wife  :-/

i went last year & stayed with 'THE BARON'
went on my own as m8 let me down, did'nt regret it as theres so many english people over there who know what they're doing & really look after you
i done approx 50 laps
come off track once(1st lap!!)
ran out of petrol outside circuit
best lap was when a chap in a porsche gt3 asked me to stick to his tail for a full lap as i had a bullet camera to film him with
best 13 miles of my life, everyone should do it :icon_thumright:

Still got some dates left for a group this year. Failing that I can put together a package for you in 2009 with dates to suit you guys.
Theres nothing wrong with doing the Ring "off your own bat" but , believe me, it helps to have some back up handy. Ask the Guy who broke 2 vertibrae last year. I sorted out everything for him.

The ring is an excelent track/road, I would suggest that everyone have a go at some point.  I live in amsterdam so its only a 3 hour drive for us to get down there so do so fairly regularly.

There are lots of horror stories and the official death toll is way off, they only include the people pronounced dead at the track and not those that manage to leave in an ambulance.

That being said, there is no reason to crash on hte nordschliefe there are marks on the road on almost every corner to tell you where to turn in and where the apex is as well as signs telling you the dangerous corners for bikes.  So provided you are not pushing the envelope too much you should be fine.

Always be on the look out for crashes tho cause crashes usually = oil and i have seen enough people crash due to this.

There are a lot of retards in cars and some on bikes, if someone is driving like a psycho jsut behind you i suggest you let them past, theres a good chance you will see them in the barrier in a couple of corners.  It sucks tho cause u pay 16 euros per lap and one fooker can ruin it for you.  I was stuck behind a renault clio with 5 guys in it, i had my wife on the back and he was swerving all over the place to stop me passing so had to find a nice streight to blip past him - DONT GET FRUSTRATED!!!!

most of all - and i understand saying this on a 10r board is moot - Dont be a spastic or you will end up one

Drive with these things in account and you wont crash, i have done 250 - 300 laps and not crashed yet and i am not exactly hanging around

count me in if organising a trip 4 nxt year..... :icon_thumright:

so wanted to return this summer but now the seeds been planted for a forum trip out there would love to join you

its an amazing place...bit disconcerting when a car comes up the inside of you in a full on 4 wheel drift but as said by others....'it as to be done'

i managed a 9min lap which i'm told is fairly respectable  :emb:
