I take it that when you were paid cash there was no form of wage slip as well? And that the letter was not a solicitors letter, just from him?

Citizens advice will give free legal and consumer advice.  However they may just tell you to appoint a solicitor, worth trying them first tough. :icon_thumright:

a conversation with the guy is needed.

1. He was likely breaking the law and the penalites for defrauding the tax man are very severe....
2. You were not becuase you will obviously declare the income on your tax return.
3. You did the damage.  Have you accepted that in writting.  But The damage was done on his premises and was an accident so he has a responsbility to pay it not you....there is no contract between you and him that says you have to pay for any damage you cause whilst working for him.
4. He should really take it on the chin as he saved a great deal of money.  But that wont work....
5. No one will take you to court for 200 quid unless they are really stupid and have cast iron proof..
6. a conversation with him if you can talk sensibly to him should go along the lines that you helped him out 200 quid is a bit steep for the damage and whilst you accept no responsibility as you were carrying out your normal work duties and there is not legal right for you to fiux any damage you do an offer to help of maybe 50 quid might make him happy and keep you in a reasonable relationship with the guy.

He sounds like a crook...you should really have nothing more to do with him.

can he prove you did it ..... (i.e witnesses) if not then don't worry ....

and just because a witness did or didn't see you means nothing its just what he can prove in court.....

he could quite easily just get trusted employee's to say you agreed you scratch it but told him that you weren't paying  :dontknow:

its all about proof  B-)
