those were the days ........... 1980's
« on: April 01, 2008, 11:28:56 AM »

so ok some of you guys might need to ask your Dad's about the great 1980's of biking, I've asked mine and he says it was a turning point for sure.

Been thinking , Yogi's fault !!!  that the 350LC was a thing of beauty and the move from the old Triumphs and Z650's etc into the GPZ's was a great time to enjoy biking.

There seemed to be a leap into a new generation of bikes (so my dad tells me  [whistle])

I know we've had threads on the old stuff but here I go again, well if your 40's aren't for a bit of nostalgia what are they for  :icon_thumright:

I blame Yogi because he mentioned in another thread about ZXR750H carb tops being a good mod on the big Kawasaki's back in 1988/9.

I recall the pro am stuff on 350LC's and the CB1100R but what was the iconic bike that moved things on, was it the GPZ550, the RD350LC, the CB750/900 or even the Katana 1000/1100 perhaps.

for me it has to be the RD350LC was back in 1980 as it changed everything and then the GSXR750 in '86 bringing race reps to us all.

I had the first ZXR400 in the country way back in 1989 and PB took it for a test, god knows why I let them but you do these things don't you. Anyhow they did write well of it and set an article that I still have here somewhere.

So this

and then this make it for me

so chose your best bike of the 80's or ask your Dad for advice  :icon_thumright:

and of course in late 1988 the ZXR750H1 which was so much nicer than the GSXR's of the time  [pray]

Ok for me, I'd agree with the 350LC and also add in the 500 Gamma and GPZ600 :icon_thumright:

The Gamma 500 was nice but never really sold as it never made the Hype overall likewise on the 500LC

Next thing you'll be telling me that a 400/4 Honda is a dream for you  [whistle] [rofl] [rofl]

GPZ600r was the first "legal" big bike. Bought a 750 turbo with 30 miles on the clock that had been slammed into the arse of a cortina. Went racing for a week and came back to find my 600r wasn't a 600 any more!
That was a scary bike! Its still running round leamington in mint nick.
ZXR750, followed by an Exup that got me a 2yr ban on the A46 and the front page of the coventry evening telegraph [whistle]
Couple of XR's, an XT, an old Bonneville(1974), Kids, no bike for a while, the the 6r J1, and the 10!
Would still love the GPZ back though.

the bike that changed things to me was the GPz900R. i had to get one in 1984.. i had one of the first ones.
was going to upgrade to the GPz1000RX but it wasnt much of a step from the 900.
the ZX10 came along and i had to have one. carb mods n all  [whistle]
that lasted me not quite a year and the ZXR750 came out, i was in love  :-P i had a H1 in red/gun metal and black.

that got nicked before it was a year old  :-(

im now on my 7th Kawasaki but still have 3 of them  [rofl]
