car LPG conversions

Has anyone had their car converted to lpg and if so what are the low points ?

Does it affect servicing and does it need specific servicing to the LPG kit ?

I'm interested in getting the Focus converted to then get my 50-60mpg  equivalent rather than the current 30mpg.

As I don't see so many around it makes me wonder why it isn't more popular but then there's also that if it becomes too popular then the government will simply up the pump price to a point to bring the tax in on it I guess although it'd be against their gemissions policies I guess

Any advice would be great as I'm only thinking about it and have no immediate plans

Andy - I wouldn't do it to the ST to be honest . Given the cost of the conversion and the availability of the gas ( although increasing ) you are going to have to be doing some serious mileage to re-coup the costs let alone start saving money  :dontknow:

Don't know anybody who has had anything converted who I could ask about the servicing issues but I guess you would need to have the system serviced by a specialist every year or so as well as having the cars' engine serviced independantly as well ( more fuckin' money  [whistle] )

My suggestion would be to sell the ST and buy a decent diesel if you are going to be doing plenty of miles but even then , given diesel is currently about 8 - 10 pence dearer than unleaded you will still need to be racking up the miles to see the saving .

yes Wippy there were Powershift grants but they were stopped in 2005 as the manufacturers moaned from what I recall in that their sales of LPG cars were hit  [wall] It was deemed that we had enough of a saving at the pumps so another load of bollocks and that's prob why there aren't queue's at LPG pumps as the costs are too high to convert in reality

Does LPG give more MPG, thought the major benefit was just the lower price of Gas compared to Petrol..

I have a friend who has a Vectra on LPG, all is fine until you have a problem on the gas side, then you need to go to a specialist, and he seems to encounter cowboys continually!

I'd tend to go with the sell the ST and buy a diesel, but the market is not good for larger engined petrol models at the moment and you could well take a bath!

I'm running 1.9 TDI 150 Astras at the moment.. allegedly they will chip to 200bhp+ with a plug in jobbie! See about 43 to the gallon.

 im agreeing with harv   u dont get more mpg   but with gas at half price it works out as if u do .......... but this is how diesel was untill loads of ppl started to use it now its dearer than petrol  :pottytrain2:,

yes Harv it's all about the price per litre and I did say 'equivalent' fella  :icon_thumright:

Aye, the ST will stay for a while and then it'll go in for a diesel Polo or similar i reckon and yes I do already see the prices of perf cars reducing quickly now that fuel costs are becoming silly  :roll:  The ST isn't a perf car really as it's the old o 170 version so it should still sell ok albeit I will lose a few bob but that's ok  :icon_thumright:

Thanks for the LPG cowboy comment as in my opinion there should be grants and regulation to move it along

Oops, sorry, should have read more carefully.

I wonder if the LPG industry is subject to CORGI regulation.. would make sense, have to look it up.

If you want any values for the Focus, give a shout, have all the books here  :lol:

bit of luck I only travel about 10 miles a day i'd need a fooking mortgage for my fuel .... 14mpg round town

and getting around 18 mixed at the minute... although with the misses in the cat I have got 21 mpg on one trip  [rofl] [rofl] [rofl]
