" Too hot to handle!"
« on: March 10, 2008, 08:21:06 PM »

Got some tyre warmers last crimbo, never used them before. My question is - they warm a tyre to 80'C , once out on track, how much hotter ( depends how hard theyre pushed i know) do they get? and at what temp is a heat cycle achieved ? Hope it,s not 80'C or else the warmers = 1 Heat cycle.

80 'c is about working temp for a track tyre mate. The idea is if you put them straight on after your sesion before the tyre cools then you can make 1 cycle last a day.

Talking to Steve Plater in Spain the tire can cool a bit before the ruber vulcanises ( forms a hard skin) but as Bob says if you let the tyre go cold then thats a heat cycle  :icon_thumright:

" I see", only after cooldown period 1 cycle is complete. So no warmers mean to many heat cycles on a typical trackday! theoretically tyres fucked before it wears out without warmers?  :icon_scratch:

You got it mate. Pirelli and metzeller recomend 6 heat cycles after that the tire will degrade slowly.  I tend to change the rear  after 1 day (2 if the tracks not to aggresive) and the front after 2-3 days.

Magic I have done 2 trackdays on my scrubs on my road bike without warmers and they had seen a race too  :icon_thumleft:

thats about 14 heat cycles and since done about 800 miles on the road... in fact could be more now  :tongue3:

some people just wear the tyres out mate.....

it depend on how hard you wanna push it really.... if you wanna go really fast then you will start seeing a problem earlier.... if you a slow to average rider then I would ride the tyre til they start losing grip  :icon_thumleft:

yea somethink like that but rember the tyres that we use are desgined for it............its just the mega extreme form a cold start.............say in jan though till early may then it wont be as bad.....................they is some what of a question over tyre warmers on trackdays with road tyres,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,mainly for the amount of time your held on pit lane..............plus the real point is for full race tyres and slicks..........there are a differant rubber than a road tyre....................so for me i would just take it easy for two laps then full on,,,,,,,,,,,,,and just try not to over cook em................ :tongue3:

Cheers fellas, one question gopher, when you describe an aggresive track, do you mean layout or surface finish ? :icon_thumright:
