Slicks
« on: December 05, 2007, 09:37:43 PM »

I am thinking about trying slicks for the first time and am looking for any info people have on them.
For instance i am aware some think michelin give little warning when letting go, Some say pirelli/metzeller wear out quickly and
Dunlop have a miriad of compounds. But how much of this is actually true ? What about Bridgestone?
I am currently using Pirelli diablo super corsa's (sc1 sc2) which many say is as close to a slick as you can get (some call it a cut slick) and to be honest i am very happy with them but they are expensive. So what do you guys think ?
Last question. For 4 days on track in spain (temp expected to be 20 + currently 22 ) would you take 2 full sets or 1 front and 2 rears?

I think im going to run slicks next year to Kev. Dunlops are supposed to be very good but like you said there are alot of compounds

Dunlop compounds
950 - soft
709 - softish
587 - med soft
758 - medium /med soft
237 - medium/ med soft long life tyre as 758
640 - med-hard
566 - hard
902 - hard
732 - hard

then tri compounds with differing edge to center tread compound

3166 - soft edge med middle
3136 - soft/med middle with medium edge
3167 - med middle with med hard edge
3127 - med hard middle with hard edge
3138 - med hard hard edge

Apparently they last 4 trackdays easy though

only problem with slicks is that you can only use them a few time (4 as Jon says) and you can't use them on the road afterwards so can't sell off  :-(

racetecs/corsas at least you can get 50/60 quid back for them

Yeah good point, very good point :icon_thumright:  But if you only use racetecs for 2 days then your paying more for your racetecs

pirrelli do a slick  dont realy offer much more than race tec  but dont chew up as much if set up of because of no groves ripping because of heat caused by movement ,  not tried bridgestone or mitchelin .

well where you start with dunlop i have only used 16.5  neumruous compounds  tripple  with differant either side etc  i have a few  numbers i can look up .
205 rears are now realy a no go  good exit grip  but have dunlop weave at speed ( even front stright at snett or silverstone national rear strieght you have to grip tank with knees and then bring elbows in !!)  200 section better  but ntecs  are the way to got  but try and get  them !!  one thing  with dunlops is you have to get set up right  where metz and pirelli ( same company) will stii work  ok with bad setup still

just my veiws  tim

any track tyre  allways use warmers  asap wheny you get in pits , when you finished for the day  put warmers on  but dont plug in soo will cool slower  chat have a pee or two and load what ever you can then remove and load bike last  to get best life from tyres

Tim i get that problem with the treaded tyre, Where the tread is cut it tears and sometimes takes out little chunks this is with an ohlins shock with the right spring but standard settings ? Do you think a slick will wear a bit better ?
