Aye, heard this on the news all day today, completely unnaceptable   (albeit we don't know all the facts)

There's not even confirmation of basic points like if data was encrypted    

A junior member of staff has been been blamed so it seems, but what the fekk was a junior member of staff doing managing such a volume of sensitive data  

apparently it is records including Name, address, date of brith, NI number, Bank account codes.....................  what a fekking nightmare.

How they can say that it doesn't appear to have fallen into the wrong hands I don't know ............ look out I say

 
The only way to safeguard is to create a new bank account in my opinion and move over to it, albeit the banks are saying that this isn't required but I assume only because they will drown in admin.

A complete fuck up which should take at least a complete layer of management with it and not only for dismissal but for a nice court appearance for negligence on a large scale


Where's the accountability for this ?  oh yes one guy resigned as is usually the case, heads on poles is what this needs

the data was encrypted with a simple passcode that a hacker could easily crack....

best way to safeguard yourself against identity fraud spend your money before you get it like me and every month the won't be no money to steal

glenn, aye, I've got no money so I'm safe but they wouldn't say on the Radio 4 news whether the data itself was encryped too  , I'd expect a high level of security around any personal data movement on media in any company regardless

Andy, it's not encrypted, just a simple password, which they reckon could be hacked in less that 2 minutes given the right tools for the job.

Government guidlines state that data this sensitive shouldn't be written to CD in any circumstances.  They should have sent it through a secure tunnel on the internet, not unmarked in the internal post which looks like TNT handle anyway.

What is scary is the amount of pressure the governing bodies are putting on school to secure data and be accountable for it, then they go and give this away.  It's not even the first time this has happened this year.

its not your bank account you should be worried about if you were on it. It's the fact that anyone listed on the CD is ripe for identifty fraud now, its like a chest full of gold that is.
