« on: October 28, 2007, 04:43:20 PM »

well I got some spare bodywork of essexboy the other day and well the condition weren't great so I went to halfords and bought paint sandpaper filler white spirit and a few other things laquer and stuff...

I have never actually sprayed anything worth painting before i.e bodywork... so this is my first real attempt... so watch this space  :icon_thumright:

have fun G.  It's all in the prep and taking time with the paint too.

I've painted loads of stuff with rattle cans and they've come out really quite good too  :icon_thumright:  obviously a compressor is better but make sure it's got a decent sixes air tank as the small ones are no good for spraying as they lose pressure too quickly.

Take loads of time sanding and filling and then primer, paint and laquer and the jobs a good un.

Preparation
Take time spraying
Don't do ti if it's very cold

Its not the air tank size, its the output that the compressor can do (one with a decent bhp). You also need a decent CFM from the compressor then you should be fine (as they top back up again, you may find the compressor works alot and keeping the pressure going all the time if its a smaller tank).

It is all i the prep though, make sure you have somewhere warm as well this time of year, otherwise you will get an orange peel type effect if it gets too cold and you put on a little too much paint, so make sure you keep the coats nice and thin, it will dry better it will however take more coats to do it this way.

Make sure the primer is dry beforehand, i know hte rattle can directions say 15-20 mins between coats. I would only stick to that if it was super fine coats you were doing and had probably doubled the amount of coats.

After doing the primer i would often go over the primer with a wet n dry of around a 600 grade (After leaving it to dry for 24 hours). Then put the top coat on, usually in around 6 light coats. The heavier the coat, the more likely it is to flake off. Im no expert, this is just what ive done in the past to achieve a good finish  :hello2:

just a few tips Glenn,

once you have put 2/3 coats of primer on and let it go off,
rub the high spots off with wet and dry again before you put the top
coat on. ( use 1200 wet/dry.)

after you have put the the 2nd top coat on flat that off aswell then put the
last coat of top coat on.

then use the t.cut and finaly polish to a nice sheen.
if you do those steps you should get a glass finish.

if you going to put a clear laquer on put that on after you have
flatted of the last top coat :icon_thumleft:

you will get spray shop results, a hair dryer to lightly blow
over the paint will let it go off faster. :icon_thumleft:

good luck.

looking alright for a race fairing, so long as you are happy with the results  :hello2:

its a pain in the ass to have to restart stuff, are you going to leave it to dry and then sand it all back?
