Painting rearsets
« on: October 13, 2007, 10:47:47 AM »

Just come across this on the R1 forum

Quote
I did not want to post this until I was sure that it would work. I found a great way to change rearsets from silver to black.
I have riden on it for about a month and it has not even tried to come off.
1. I took a wire brush and scraped the top layer of powder coating off.

2. Then I primed it with Rustoleum primer in black.

3. Then I sprayed them with rustoleum textured paint (walmart)

The paint looks like a powder coating (just like the stock texture).

It has not even started to wear on the foot pegs.

Looking at their website I'd expect the CombiPrimer - Adhesion Primer to be a better base coat on alloy, if not the Rust-oleum 2 Pack Super adhesive adhesion primer.  It's a lot of effort to strip and clean the rearsets, so it's better to go the extra mile in getting the base right.

Hammerite is good for shiny stuff, especially using Smoothrite, which is brilliant on Yamaha LC engine covers, and last quite well.
