Shagged tyres on track?
« on: September 18, 2007, 03:33:36 PM »

I've got Pirelli Diablo Corsa IIIs on the ZX, the rear has done 3000 miles or so, is slightly squared off and is certainly approaching the legal limit.  My question to you is have you, or would you run such a tyre on track (Silverstone) or would it be pushing it? Do the break away characteristics of the tyre change dramatically or is it unsafe ragging a tyre so close to its wear markers?   There is a bit more meat on sides of the tyre, especially where the compound is softer, but its far from ideal.

I know there's a tyre dude there anyway so I can get it replaced in case of dire need, but it would be nice to completely destroy an already knackered tyre instead of a lovely fresh one!

You could get away with using it if there is still plenty of rubber on the sides, BUT you will have much more fun and be quicker on a round tire rather than a square tire.

Why would you want to run a square tyre at a track day when you have payed alot of money to be there in the first place :dontknow:

Do yourself a favour and fit a decent set of tyres before you go. You definately wouldnt want to have  a new set of tyres fitted half way through the day if its a ride in ride out service. You could lose a couple of sessions and waste the day all together.

and surely a squared off tyre will make the shifts from side to side more difficult/dangerous on a track day  :dontknow:

If in doubt don't bother else it'll end in tears  [naughty]

Get some fresh ones mate. Even scrubs of ebay ,had no probs with the set I got (racetecs). At silverstone you could find yourself on the square edge at poss 120 mph + , abbey curve (I think) left just before going under bridge. Rather you than me.

I wouldn't bother mate and if you change tyres at silvers you will pay stupid prices too.... you should get a set of scrubs or another set of corsa 3's

I wouldn't run a squared tyre.... and I wouldn't run road tyres either ... but thats just me... do what your happy with  :icon_thumleft:

Thanks very much for the advice, you're basically all saying what I knew I SHOULD do in reality... plus its nice to have the blistered up tyre on the bike for all to see on the road  :hello2:
