a WEIGHTY subject

Since becoming a Driving Instructor some 23 years ago my weight as increased dramatically :-(

Yes my own fault, and yes I have done something about it as I was 23 stone 3 years ago and am now 19 and ahalf.

Am 5`11`` tall so far to short for my weight ;-)

So, healthy eating I know and have started that today.

Am a member of a gym and only go once a week at the moment and do about an hours cardio. Gonna start uping that to four times a week.

Not really looking to build muscle, but obviously looking to increase stamina and strength.

Actually looking for a kinda bike specific sorta programme as really want to get into the trackday groove next year.

Now, I know some of you are what I call Fit Fuckers, just wondered have you got or have come across any sort of regime that might help

Excersise bike,Treadmill,Rower,Cross trainer and swimming are all good cardio excersises for losing the weight.

Build up to it slowly though else if you kill yourself on the first few sessions you will lose all will to go to the gym.

Let us know how you get on, will will keep you motivated. :icon_thumright:

a mountain bike and a bit of off road riding on it , jut a little at atime is fun and certainly sheds the pounds  :icon_thumright:

looks like you're doing really well shedding the pounds anyhow, well done and good luck with it all  :icon_thumright:

I recently decided to lose some weight. As you probably know there are 2 areas to weight loss:
1) Diet - I've started looking at the fat content on labels and was surprised at how much fat some items have. I also have a packet of Thai bites and/or oat cakes for snacking on, and I eat as many of these as I feel like. I also try to keep my portions to a reasonable size, and I almost never have seconds. Desserts are for special occasions only (dinner is not a special occasion!).
2) Exercise - The trick here is to try and do something everyday. Start small and easy, just go for a 5 minute run every morning, then next week 10 minutes everyday. Doing it at the beginning of the day gets your metabolism going for the next 12 hours. I also play squash once a week and go to Pilates once a week, in the evenings. The pilates has helped me be more active in general because my body moves better again, which makes me want to do more exercise.

I also take every opportunity to be more active. If the guys at work go for a kick about, I'm there. If some mates wanted cycle on Saturday morning, I'm there.  I've noe lost almost a stone in the last 2 months - I had hoped for more, but forgot that I would be picking up muscle mass too.

However, if you really want to shed pounds...I would say 1 thing....RUN!

Seriously, its one of the best ways to lose pounds!  I've competed in a few events last few years, and hadn't done anything since injury ended my rugby career.  So I was stuck in Wales with work and all I had was the welsh countryside and my legs!  So started running..

After a week or so (of really hard work getting into it) I started to really enjoy it.  I went from running around the sleep little town to running for 30mins. I ran everday and in the end was running about 50min to an 1 hours, and covering about 6-7 miles.  Loved it....

9 weeks later I had lost 2 and a bit stone, and was fitter than I probably had been in 5 years.  Trouble is now I'm a lazy fucker so not doing anything which is only carrying on till next week.  Then I'm hitting the fitness hard ready for winter.

I have had a few friends and colleagues that needed to lose weight and I took em running and all of them now run regularly.  Once you get to your ideal weight, just run 2 or 3 times a week.  Few recommendations though..

Road Run.  Treadmills are crap.  They generate the momentum and so your not really running like you would normally.  Get out in your neighbourhood or countryside and run. Flat to begin with and then maybe put a few hills in there.  Always try and run faster up the hills, make your heart pump and burn fat.  And its free...don't need a gym to do this!

Spend money on decent running shoes....New Balance or Asics seem to be the best.  About 60-80quid for a good pair.  Even better, get yourself down to a proper training/tri shop and get some fitted to your feet.  You still will only be looking at 70-80 for a custom fit pair.  Obviously you only/want to do this if you get into it properly.

Finally....get yourself a good playlist on your ipod or other generic mp3 player.  Somethign with a good beat to it....it just helps you pace.  I find crappy poppy dance music works as it has a good beat/rhythm to it.  Or any mixed dance compliation album, like The Annual or Dance Remix

Anyway...thats my advice and so fair, I've never been proved wrong with it!  Shame I can't practice what I preach at the mo....rock on Monday!

Bartman ..... I am you man for this......

first thing you need to get you head round is this.....

Muscle Burns Fat faster....... but you don't want bulk you want stamina so you want to do a a circuit type weight program.....

each with cardio either of the weights...... you want to do 20 minute warm up on a machine then you want to do 20 miuntes and the end 10 off which is the fastest you can manage this will do the majority of the burning after you have already worked hard on the weights... then the last 10 minutes you want to cool down....

after every session you want to stretch... this helps the muscle heal quicker and stop injury....

weights.... you do not want to do heavy at all but want all stamina work..... if you go by percentages you maximum weight you can lift is 100% you want to be doing about 20 to 25 % of you maximum weight....

on your circuit you want to split the body down for different days.... I can do programs for different amount of days, let me know how many days you want to commit to and I can do you a program  :icon_thumleft:

you need to do more than 1 day.. though....

diet though..... if you need help with this then I can do that too....

you need to change the way you eat too..... instead of 3 normal meals of the eat when you can like you probably are doing you need to east less more often...

you need to eat at least 5 meals a day and they need to be smaller than a normal meal..... if you can eat more time the better..... you should never feel hungry like this but you should never fill yourself up....

also summit that helps me is I diet for 5 days cheat for 2 just to relax and stop me from going mad....

I agree Glenn is your man for the training programs and diet tips. :icon_thumright:

The only reason i would say treadmill is better than road running is that its easier on your knees and i always found watching a fit bird in front of me on the cross trainer was better motivation than pounding the streets in the pissing rain :lol:

I agree with white rabbit running is the best weight burn but I wouldn't recommend this for someone weighting 19 stone.... say goodbye to you knees  :dontknow:


keep it to the bike if you on the road or if your in the gym...

the rower is the best all round and hard too....

  Some real good advise there... have to agree that road running is not a good idea for a big chap... If you find the gym a bit tedious (some do) Try boxing or similer it's like having a personal coach there is always someone to push you, And boxing is generally about getting your body to the ideal weight.. (Not fighting as a heavy weight is good enough reason for anyone to lose a few pounds [rofl] ) Try the gym first but bear it in mind, When i boxed in the mob i was in the best shape of my life it really tests every inch of your body.... P S try skipping sounds strange but if you keep on your toes it is easy on the joints but excellant for fat burning  :icon_thumright:
