There's lots of cheaper, if not so robust models of the same sort of thing- search ebay for 'compressor 12v' to see plenty for  under a tenner.

If it's just punctures you're planning on fixing then I'd go for the co2 cannisters, but if you're planning on taking an inflatable mattress then the compressor will save you having to blow it up using lung power - deffo something to consider if you're planning on spending time up in the Andes for example, 'cos trying to manually blow up a double airbed at 12,000 feet after a knackering day in the saddle is not gonna be fun....

We're taking 6 months off to ride to Thailand, or possibly go around South America for 6 months.

The compressors are only for inflating tyres. The one you linked to might be what I'm looking for - I would like to see the size of it first though.
