Paint or powder coat?
« on: November 10, 2006, 05:33:25 PM »

I've been looking into gettin my rims re done in a gloss black rather than the friggin awful brown they are now.

I've been quoted 150.00 to get the painted for a ride in ride out service by a company called PSG near me. They don't do powdercoating as they reckon that you can't get as good a finish with powdercoat

I've also called up afew of the bigger names such as Race Paint and Dream Machine.

Racepaint want 230.00 for a ride in ride out service and Dream Machine 330.00.

That is a big difference in price between painting them and powder coating them.

I know that powder coating seems to be tougher, but I've also been told that if it chips you have to re powder coat the whole wheel.

I've been told that a painted wheel gives a much better finish and if chipped, can be touched up easily.

Any ideas guys?

hi, one of the problems with powder coating is it's toughness....
if the wheels arent perfectly clean when the powder is applied, the surface contaminants heat up when the wheel is baked- this causes small bubbles, which look shit, and are slightly weaker than the rest of the wheel.. once this weakens sufficiently, it chips, water gets underneath, and weakens the powders ability to cling.  You end up with a sort of film of powder coat, that is one solid piece, but does not actually adhere to the wheel's surface..
now your problem is getting the powder coat off the wheel to redo them. it need shot, sand or bead blasting, which costs money, and is difficult with powder coat....
if it was me i'd get a decent company to paint and lacquer them properly. that way, if you chip it, you can touch up  (use a common car colour (ford is most popular)if possible- it's easier to get a matched touch up pen and you can get quite a few blacks and reds from halfords )
or if you change your mind and want to paint the whole bike pink, you can do it with ease
hope this helps mate B-)

another point i forgot to mention is that wheels flex slightly when you ride- excuse me for teaching you to suck eggs.
paint, with plasticisers added is flexible..... powder coat, although nylon based is less flexible - this also causes the loose shell effect ispoke about earlier.
go for paint...
i would

Something to thinik about there Mikey.

I called around a few bike painters and they've all advised me to go the powdercoat route, even the ones that don't do it.

Does anyone no if the standard Kawasaki wheels are painted or powdercoated then?

rossi, in that case, do you know anybody interested in a set of 2002 bmw m5 wheels in beautiful bubbly chipped powder coat black.......

i dont!!!

the choice is entirely up to you mate.. most powder coaters do sheets of metal, or lengths, because they're not subject to much in the way of torsion, stretching or compression..
wheels are, sadly
try calling a few powder coaters and ask their opinions, i'm not a professional coater (although i do sound like one!!!), i'm just speakin from experience. sound s like you're in no rush so ask as many people as you can
another tip is to look in bike trader for people advertising bikes for sale with powder coated wheels, call them and ask their advice- cheeky, but effective

good look matey

when one of my mates got his busa wheels powder coated ,when he tryed to get the tyres fitted the bent out realy bad (fu*ked wheel).i think the powder coater baked them at too high a temprature, and aneald the alloy making them softer i would stick with paint ..................
