Wouldn't worry too much about highsiding it mate. Almost unheard of on the road, you'd have to seriously be on it for that to happen.

I high sided my 600 pulling out of a side street ont a main road in rush hour traffic. Pulled off as I had done every morning for the past 3 years, too much throttle versus lean angle not enough warmth in the tyres and bang she spat me off. So I have that in my mind alot. It's not so much being thrown and hurting afterwards it's how helpless you feel when it goes and how fast it happened. To quick for me to catch or try and control.

Jon really sorry to hear about your mate.

There have been a lot of crashes and near misses on the forum the last 3 weeks.  It's just part of riding bikes, I know guys who have had serious accidents, over the years it's probably about 1 in 10 of any group you regularly ride with will get a serious injury.

I've been out on the bike today but I really focus on track riding and probably do less than 1000 road miles a year, as I've got faster on track road riding has just kind of lost it's appeal for me.  The guy I ride with has given up road bikes completely following a nasty crash on his CBR600 that has left him with his shoulder pinned.  You just have to decide whatever is best for you.....I love riding bikes as fast as I possibly can but I know the road is just not the place for quick riding any more......

Biking is an addiction as strong as any drug you could get hooked on.....it's just unbeatable, I know during the winter I miss it terribly and use the time to do work on the bikes in the garage to try and stay in touch.  I can often be sat at a meeting in work and my mouth will be saying one thing while by brain is hooking 5th gear through the Jim Clark esses at Croft.......I read somewhere that people who ride bikes are very unlikely to become depressed.  It's like we have our own therapy session with each ride...... ..

Where the hell am I going with this.......the risks are very real and the effect on your family if you are unlucky could be devastating........life is risk.....but I think if you are open and honest with yourself when you have a "moment" then the risks can be controlled as much as possible.  The positive benefits of biking far outweigh the negatives but the track is the place to really find out what you and your bike can do.......

:iamwithstupid: Me too - I do less than 1 000 miles a year on the road and do about a dozen or so trackdays a year.

As people all ready have said...life is one BIG risk!!....one BIG risk assesment!....smoking,drinking,sex,drugs....rock n roll  ....cars,bikes,trains,pushbikes,ladders.......the list is endless!!!You could die or be seriously injured doing your every day job, going to the pub, walking along the high street...whatever! But every thing you do on your bike has to be assessed...every corner, every junction...that car you have caught up with, whats he/she doing/going to do!!My favourite one now is DEER!!!...all R1tastics fault.....i scan the verges for Deer running out of the woods.....the list goes on....and on...
Just be careful out there and dont give up for the wrong reasons!!!

I agree Fossil. I've come from a '98 ZX6 G1 to an '07 10r and I was worried about the bike. I still have a bit of a mental block going through corners, I have relaxed a lot due to the fact I have learnt right wrist control. I feel alot safer on the 10 than my old bike.

Maybe thats a bad thing, but I defo feel safer I just need to not be so shit scared of the power and worrying about it highsiding mid corner. Last Friday it did a power wheelie ( I don't do wheelies) and it caught me by surprise but it didn't scare me I still felt in control.

Inpromptu wheelie eh ...Nice one - it brings another dimension to riding bikes when (on top of everything else to think about )you now have to consider the front end lifting ! Not previously been much of an issue for me but now riding the TEN it becomes a SERIOUS thing to keep your mind on when your giving it the berries - as ZXYOGI says risk risk risk but the wheelie thing still gets me from behind - i never know its coming until its arrived !

Referring to a few posts up:

I think it is exactly because these new bikes are "safer" i.e. handle better, etc. that contributes to the seriousness of a lot of accidents. If you feel safer at a higher speed, you will go faster more often, and also give yourself less reaction time more often, if something unexpected were to happen. Then if the worst happens, it happens at a much higher speed and the chances of serious injuries and fatalities rise significantly.

There goes another of me theories then !
Or you could make your bike really wobbly by buggering up the settings, ride slower as a result and feel safer !   :-S
