He knew there was no way of recovering so took his hands off the bars on purpose...  I have heard this is standard practise for some road racers, as holding onto the bike can often cause more damage as you go with the bike as opposed to being flung away from it. 

I tried it and i think it worked, still broke a sholder, 2 ribs and fractured my skull. :emb:
