Spanish matriculation of my ZX10R
« on: August 30, 2015, 12:27:17 AM »

Well as the MOT has run out on my bike, and I've been unable to get a dodgy one so I can carry on riding it here in Spain, I've decided to start the process of matriculating it onto Spanish plates. I'm really undecided about what to change, as the Spanish are very keen on Type Approval and 'E' markings. As its still really hot over here and I don't relish the thought of changing the whole exhaust system when its 35c most days, I'm going to leave the Yoshimura system on but fit the dB killers, remove the R&G tail-tidy and refit the stock one complete with reflector and see how it goes. The first stage of the inspection is emissions, exhaust and noise test. I've already got the Certificate of Conformity from Kawasaki which states it doesn't need any modification to drive on the right. If it passes, I'll be given a 'technical document' detailing the bike spec for my €140 fee, which I then take to Traffico in Tarragona, who will produce my vehicle documents and issue my bike a registration number. Once my number plate has been made, my €7 annual road tax paid to the town hall, and sorted out some insurance, I'll be legally able to blast around these lovely roads once more.
If it doesn't pass, there will be a follow-up post about changing exhausts in extreme heat and humidity, drinking water and sweating lots.

If any of you are coming to northern Spain and need somewhere biker-friendly to stay, check us out, there's always a deal to be done.

Well in anticipation of a very strict examination of my bike, I removed the tail-tidy and refit the original number plate holder, and also fitted the dB killers to the Yoshimura race system and decided to chance it. If it fails, I'll have no option than to strip it down and fit the standard exhaust. So I turned up at 11am today, after producing the paperwork for the process, I took it to the emissions area. Emissions were fine, next the noise test. I don't know where they place the microphone at track-days, but the tester placed it 1m to the side of the end of the can. It read 91.2dB at 5450rpm, which under Spanish rules would be a fail. However, he pointed out that because the VIN plate says it can be 100dB at 5450rpm, they will pass it. Next, they weighed and measured the bike, took photos and a charcoal rubbing of the frame number, tested the brakes, gave me a bollocking for using too much silicone, and issued me with a 2 year pass. The whole process took 90 minutes and cost €109. Next, I have to pay my taxes for the bike, then go to Traffico who will notify DVLA that the bike is now Spanish, issue me with papers and a registration number and that's it.

Thanks chaps. I have been dreading it, hearing horror stories about how every component needs to be 'E' marked. Not so, they're just as lax as any UK testing station. So who's up for a blast to Andorra in the Pyrenees on Sunday?

Well as of 11am today, its now a Spanish bike. Got the papers through, spanish number plate, paid import duty but they waived the IVA (VAT) as i'm not officially a resident until November. All in, its taken 12hrs including driving to and from every place I needed to visit, and £365 which includes the 2 year ITV test. Just sat here waiting for the insurance quotes to drop into my inbox....
