Number plate legislation, trying to be legal!
Waverider:
I've inherited a 5 digit number plate which I was considering putting on one of my bikes, not the 10 as I'm sticking with my 6 x 4. My thinking was I could make it smaller and still be legal, so I read through the dvla's regulations and taking into consideration the font sizes and borders etc. I worked out it could be 7 x 6.5.
As the plate has to be made by a registered supplier to be legal I had a phone round and no one I can find will make anything smaller than a 9 x 7.... The plate has to have the BS number and also the suppliers name and postcode so that kind of rules out a show plate.
I'm afraid there isn't really a point to my post I just needed to express how f**kin pi$$ed I am that legally I can make my plate smaller but I can't legally get one made. Just seems stupid to me.
Pewters:
Just curious as to why your do against using a show plate ? Mine is 8x6 and never had any trouble.
Waverider:
I'm not against then, all my bikes have show plates but after hearing that the fine for a dodgy plate has gone up to 1000 quid I thought I'd try and be fully legal on my slower bike. As far as I can tell this means having the plate made by a company that is registered with the dvla. I may be wrong on this but I don't want to go to the trouble of getting it legal then getting some petty rozzer nicking me anyway.
On the first day of owning my ten I got pulled and after exhausting all avenues to nick me, insurance, me admitting to speeding, tyres etc. the rozzer claimed he had to do me for something and pulled out a regulation bike number plate and as mine was about 5mm smaller did me for that. Back then I only got a £30 fine but it pissed me off enough to get a 6 x 4 and not stop anymore. Anyway waffle over I think I will end up with a show plate as it does seem the only option.
Chappo:
I always run a 7x5 and never had any issues with it, even got pulled over once but didn't even spot the plate so can't be that bad lol
NinjaPaul:
Could you get a plate made on a 9"x7" but ask the supplier to centralise everything (keeping within the regs) and then get it trimmed down to size afterwards? :dontknow:
