One of the reasons I like having a personal reg plate, its smaller than the billboard 9x7 plates but still completely legal.  :headbang:

Exactly the reason I make a point of avoiding anywhere like that.
You know the police are going to be out in force on operations so anything not right you take a risk with.
Besides - a 5 character plate is tiny and still legal if you know the rules :D

Glad I stayed clear off Matlock now, was going to go @ 1300hrs decided just to go down MFN instead. This is just the normal begging off summer purge! Things will cool down once season picks up and they have proper work to do.

You could easily have a 'small' plate but still be legal with that reg mate, just a bit of changing to the font sizes and you're sorted.  :icon_thumleft:

Motorcycles and tricycles
There are separate rules for motorcycles and tricycles.
Motorcycles registered from 1 September 2001 must only
display a number plate at the back of the vehicle.
Motorcycles registered before 1 September 2001 can
display a number plate at the front, but do not have to.
The characters on the number plate must be set out
over two lines and must be displayed on all motorcycles
registered on or after 1 January 1973.

Tricycles made from four-wheeled bodies, such as saloon
cars and quad bikes, must meet the normal requirements
on page 9.
Tricycles built from motorcycles must meet the rules for
motorcycles shown below.
. Characters must be 64mm tall
. Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 44mm wide.n The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 10mm
. The space between characters must be 10mm
. The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 30mm
. The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be at least 11mm
. Vertical space between the age identifier and therandom numbers must be 13mm

dont think you can use smaller letters even if its a private plate no matter how many digits you have.

This is my plate which uses fonts in the legal size and spacing as per the post above. Its approx 7"x6" and completely legal. With a five character reg number you could have a plate made up this size no probs, maybe even a fraction smaller if you go right to the limit of the regulations.

A good rule of thumb with registration numbers is if it doesn't have the makers details and the correct BS logo (BS 145d, currently) then it isn't legal. Thats what the police look for in North Wales. If the makers details are on the plate and its not the correct size or spacings etc then the maker can be fined and lose the ability to make plates.

yeah so as long as the sizes below are adhered to the physical size of the plate is irrelevant then, i understand that...so can us lesser mortals who dont have private plates get em smaller and still be within the law....
