newbie wanting first gen zx10r advice
« on: December 14, 2014, 01:08:08 PM »

hi all just joined. sorry to be a pain but ive yet to purchase a 10. ive had a z1000 for nearly 10yrs now but have allways wanted a 1st gen 10. i was about to buy one but have just started reading about the frame and wheels cracking. just wondered if anyone knows if this common or just a few and horror stories ? i know theyre starting to get on a bit now and a decent llow mileage one is not a big price difference to the gen 3 which i really like, but as said ive allways wanted the original animal as its known. ps i know im probably better looking at the 05 as something to do with a transmission upgrade. any info would be greatly appreciated thanks . ride safe .

Gen 1 all the way......Its the reason this forum was born  :icon_thumright:

Ive never 'known' anyone of having the issues you have mentioned. Ive read a story or 2 about it but would say its a freak occurrence so get a Gen 1  :glasses7:

Welcome aboard fella.  I'd go for the latest model you can afford - but at the end of the day it all depends on the condition/mileage/your tech experience etc, etc

any modern ally sports bike is liable to breaking in a crash. In an effort to make them light, the manufacturers only make them strong in the planes they need to be strong in normal use. In a crash, the bikes can receive an impulse in a direction they aren't designed to be strong so a relatively small impulse could cause a failure. The aluminium alloy when cast especially, is strong in compression but not in tension, its like a carrot and easily broken. I've seen plenty of all makes broken like this (this is my area of work), not always from big crashes either.
Buy a gen 1, they're ace. I currently race a gen 4 but if i just did track days, i'd be on a gen 1, ace fun and cheap as buttons. HTH

thankyou all for your replies. ive allways gone as new and low mileage as poss. but as much as i love the look of all the 10s theres just that something about the first gen. worked with a guy recently that had owned one and he said he`d had r1s blades gixers but reckoned the 10 scared the living daylights outta him. mcn reckon its the ultimate super sport. just id seen some posts and pics on forums with frames cracking , non accident related and just figured peeps on here might be able to shed some light on it. (as u have x) . not sure if theyd been wheelied hard , but from what ive seen wheelies even low ones are defo gonna happen if not trying. when i get one be new year now will post up. thanks again. keep it shiny side up x

04 to 05 was a difference to the stator to prevent an issue with them burning out.
No real difference in the transmission.
They do have an issue with the welds cracking at the headstock from wheelies.
Heavy/prolonged will cause it.
Well known issue.
Never known of wheels cracking though and there are some animals on here ;)

I think the front wheel was a recall due to a couple disintegrating but not sure.im not really a big wheelie lad, love em but never really felt good at em. Was just a bit worried that it's common for the frames to crack, but suppose anything abused , hard wheelies etc can fail. Torn between 1st and 3rd gen.

Just asked a mate and yep.....Wheels had casting issues which could lead to failure so it was an official recall

Heres the link to the recall

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/searches/expand.asp?uniqueID=BBA27DDE09972D7D00256EE50040FDFD&freeText=Blank&tx=

Heres the link so you can search for any vehicle and check for recalls

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/

Hope this helps

I have had a few gen 1 and never had a frame crack under normal circumstances

I have crashed two on road and 1 on track and the frame was fine in these 3 crashes

the last crash I had was a buggeer though hit a curb on a low side and it did crash the frame , there was some force to it and so it would happen under force but I haven't seen any under normal riding

Get a gen one they are totally bonkers .....I actually know of a racing rep absolutely mint bike that was up for sale it won't be chip the engine was tweeked to around 200bhp with lots of gadgets
