Gold DID
« on: June 19, 2014, 07:52:43 AM »

Am I right in thinking that the gold did is the bestest strongest chain on the market?

Is there a good advantage to changing to a 520 iv got various sized 525 sprockets & don't really want to replace that lot as well :-(

The heavier the chain i.e. bigger pitch size, the more power it saps just to make it turn, but it will last longer.

No real advantage to change pitch on a road bike.

But you should always change chain and sprockets as a set. They wear out together and a worn sprocket will wear out a new chain quickly because it is no longer an exact match of link to sprocket.

Assuming you don't want to do the 520 conversion, any DID O or X-ring chain will be good, the latter are supposed to last longer, gold ones might keep rust at bay better due to the finish, the heavy duty ones last even longer but is probably overkill.
You're chain maintenance will make more of a difference IMO than what you choose of the above.

I usually use gold non-HD x-ring DID with good results.

As for Renthal, I have used their hard-anodised sprockets paired with DID. Can recommend Talon rear sprockets too.
I don't use Renthal chains as the connecting links aren't like DIDs, they are solid you need a proper peening tool or weight\hammer to spread the pin end for a secure fit (at least the last few I've seen are like that). A right faff. Pretty much any cheapo chain tool can deal with spreading the soft link type heads on a DID rivet link so better for DIY IMO.

I use Renthal front sprockets but prefer the Supersprox rear, they have a gold anodised aluminium centre but steel teeth.  Look great and strong.

I have a black 04 and current chain/sprocket is standard silver color. I now need to replace chain/sprockets so not sure whether to get gold chain/rear and whether it would look better or worse.
What does everyone else think?

Just bought Renthal sprockets F & R for 06 ZX together with Renthal gold SRS chain. Have run this chain on Blackbird for years so recommend (yes a bit faffy fitting but that's what mates are for). Run a Talon rear sprocket on the B'bird but went for tried and trusted Renthal on ZX.
