« on: May 16, 2007, 02:32:22 PM »

This is my first brand new Bike and have never had to "run in" a bike before.

So, whats the crack, how long at so many revs etc.

Thanks in advance

Well Im keen to get my ten peneth in here 'cause Ive heard read people say you dont need to run em in which (and I aint backing down) is aload of total bollocks.  Just 'cause modern engineering is so good it dont mean you can take the mikey. Problem is most people who dont 'run in' probably dont own the bike years later.
Even brakespads benefit from settling in. Chain, tyres, pistons/rings/bore you name it and it probably benefits from getting gradually used to its new place in life.
Dont listen to tales of  "fast run-in fast bike" and other such garbage - use your common sense (of which you must have loads 'cause your bought a TEN !)

Gone off on one there a bit but it gets my goat to read seriously bad advice and I wouldnt want you to swayed...

fossil without wanting to get into this  discussion again......

there is only 2 ways of running in a bike......... one to the book i.e keeping it at a certains revs for so many mile etc

the other way is sensible for the first 100 miles ish.... then on runs wait till the engine is at temprature and the ride it as you normally would.....

yes the latter will take off a few years off the life but you do see better performance from it.....

it isn't bollox about new engines being more robust otherwise we would all be breaking down...... You don't see racer's getting out for the first 1000 miles at low revs on there new engines

its all done on the dyno being heated and run at different increments but they will still give it the beans..... I know what your gonna say race engines don't have a long shelf life but its not to say that if you run an engine in like the race engine that they wouldn't last almost as long.....

Bartman ,

had my 10 from new ( April 07 now with 800 miles on it )
Best advice I got was from this site but it ranged wildly from " cane the fecker from the off if you don't plan on keeping it for more than a couple of years " to " potter around at under 5000 revs for the first 500 miles or so "

I hedged my bets and all seems ok to me . Treat it with some sort of mechanical " sympathy " whilst you get used to it . I imposed a personal limit of 6000 revs for the first couple of hundred miles and just increased it gradually from there for each 100 miles or so ( you will soon get pissed off with this and feel the need to wring it's neck !! )
I suppose the best advice I got was to ride it "  properly " and not labour the engine in too high a gear and make sure you use the gearbox fully and resist the urge to short shift or pile on loads of " motorway " miles just to get it done . This will also serve to notify you of any problems with the bike that need sorting at the first service !!

Once it has had it's first service and the oil swapped for fully synthetic it feel soo much nicer to ride for some reason  :dontknow:

Maybe ,by this time , you are just more used to riding it  [pray]

Mototune method makes more power no question, but what effect does it have on the gearbox, or the valves, or the main bearings, etc... His method is all about seating the rings, but there are a lot more parts in the motor that need to break in and settle.

When I got my new bike I kept it under 6k rpm for the first 50 miles, changed the oil and filter then mostly under 8k rpm for the next 500 miles, but running it upto 10k rpm every now and then. At 500 miles I did another oil/filter change, then just rode it. When I looked at my sump plug at the first 2 oil changes there wasn't a single metal shaving in there, so I'm happy that everything was good in the motor.

Do NOT:
- keep it at constant throttle and/or revs for extended periods of time (work up and down the box and rev range)
- labour the motor i.e. whack open the throttle at 20mph in 6th gear
