I've decided that I want to get in shape again... even though technically round is a shape!

I have never liked running, but mainly because I've always been crap at it. Time to change that! So I've gone out and bought some running shoes (most expensive shoes I've ever bought actually!) and I'm ready to start. So what's the best way to get into this? Run round the block once today, twice tomorrow, etc..? Walk/run/walk/run..?

Et....depending on which leg you favour....start with 1 in front of the other and keep that rythmn going,its easy enough Pal!!

When I get a leg over I usually don't have any trouble building up a suitable rhythm

I also like to keep in shape.   

It just happens that this months shape is a sack of flour and next month will be a sack of potatoes.   [rofl]

Et the best way to start running would be to find a Grassy area football pitch it perfect..... and what you want to do is use the pitch as you judge...... strat by running the width at 80% of you fastest speed and then jogging the length at 45 to 50% of you fastest.... do this till you are happy.... but no less than 8 times roundor minimum 20 minute which ever comes first.... then once you get a bit of stamina change it around run the length 80 % then jog the width once you get better run the length and 100% and the width at 50% once you are comforable with this and you knees and got use to a soft impact I.e on grass then you can build up to road running...

just aim to do 3 miles first week and add a mile each week to 2 weeks..... within 4 months of doing this at least ones a week your should be able to bang out a 10 miler easy..... average speed for a 10 miler should be around 1.30 to 1.45

this is the real fat burner 10 milers is where it is at.....  but don't just go out on the pavement and run a couple of miles impact on your knees and the strain to you leg muscles might put you off.....

remember to warm up stretch and to warm down stretch too..... this will help to prevent injury and to help recovery quickly.... I haven't been running in a while but if you wanna go for a run I might pop round as I do like a bit of a run  :icon_thumright:

I needed to lose weight badly, started walking, found it boreing.

Went to the gym, went from 23 stone down to 16 stone. Stopped and crept back up to 20 stone, now back at gym and down to 18 1/2 stone.
The Instructors at a good gym will sort you out a programme that suits you. I found it motivateing when I saw and felt how strong and fitter I became when I saw it in black and white on my personal fittness planner.

As a footnote, have found beiing that bit fitter and lighter as made my rideing so much more pleasureable

I could be a fitness instructor the amount of training I give in the gym .... I was going to be a PTI but couldn't live with not having a normal consistant income... :dontknow:

Top advice - keep it on grass - look after your knees. Little and often mate.

Cheers G, this is the info I was after. I have a school field nearby, will give it a go (might have to take a side cutter to get in...).

Bart - I'm also tempted to join a gym for a couple of months and see how it goes. Several people have told me to do weights to lose weight.

Simon - no problem, a lower centre of gravity changes direction quicker  :tongue3:

Et - muscle burns fat....... you need to have s good diet to help with this otherwise you will find that you will just grow muscle under the fat and weigh even more....

I can help with diet and training programs...... Yogi when he pulls his finger out wants to come with to the gym with me....
