Motovudu V California Super Bike School
« on: March 05, 2013, 07:55:28 AM »

I have posted before being a fan of the CSS - experience has been that it has improved my riding, bike control and my appreciation of how input affects the bike. A few guys on here didn't agree and bigged up Simon Crafar's instruction and his Motovudu techniques. Being the open minded chap that I am I bought Motovudu and had a look. Interesting stuff. After CSS beating sitting forward out of me Simon Crafar actually recommends it.....
There are a number of night and day differences in the doctrine. Crafar is clearly far more front end biased than the CSS. I tried his turning on a closed throttle which in some corners I found worked very well on corners such as Park, Chicane and Hair Pin type features - it just means carrying more speed into the corner as not to have to get back on the throttle before the apex - bit of trial and error and got that working well - I can feel it does load the front more (as you would expect) - would'nt perhaps be so confident in the wet with this but will have to try.
My perception is he has quite a few pokes at the CSS teachings, quite blatant actually, bollocks against the tank, counter steering, throttle control re suspension and throughout a bend (completely agree with that one, bigger crash immenient!) and his early entry as opposed to the late turning point line, on a closed throttle. Clearly all his teachings work as he is a phenominal rider -his likening to dirt bike riding of sitting forward to reduce wheelies and to shift weight forward to allow the rear to slide out without taking you with it makes total sense - his confidence in modern suspension is notable as well over throttle to control it.
Whilst some of his theories fly in the face of Keith Code I quite quickly started to find some of what he teaches to be easy and very effective - instant harder braking - again I'd be wary in the wet - (and an area I was really lacking in), stealing a few meters by using brake hard at less than 30 degree angle, brilliant, I was all upright braking before less a little trial braking, and the closed throttle to the apex, I like that, faster entry and delaying the throttle alittle longer and then HARD on the throttle stop. Shortening bends and making straights longer to use power - all sounds like common sense but it starts to unravel small habitual errors that recover a few seconds per lap. Whilst on my first outing of the year I suffered because of some technical problems leading ot confidence issues on corner speed (sorted now) but I eventually matched my PB and unquestionably that time was made up by very hard power on the straights and later harder braking leading to closed throttle faster entries. I couldn't get comfortable sitting forward for this and contrary to Crafars belief it is heavy on the arms to sit back when braking I clamp the tank quite happily and effectively with my legs stressing the front less. So all in all I am taking a bit of Motovudu and CSS and finding what works best for me. Thanks to those pointing in Crafars direction :icon_thumright:

I'm please you have posted - give me a steer here - I'm riding the new ZX10R geared 16-43, can you give me an idea of what gears you are entering corners in around Cadwell please?

Remember than my gear selection may not be the same as yours (depending on speed and style and obviously gearing) :

Starting on the start finish line:

Coppice (down 1) - 4th - no brakes
Charlies (down 1) - 3rd - late entry (very)
Park Straight - all the way to 6th
Park (down 3) 3rd - Grab 4th through exit at Chris Curve
Mansfield (down 2) - 2nd
Chicane - 2nd (should run 1st but its a bit fruity on the exit) grab 3rd on the run to the mountain
Mountain (down 1) - 2nd - dab of rear brake - grab 3rd
Hall Bends - 3rd
Hairpin (down 2) - 1st - grab 2nd on exit to Barn
Barn - 2nd - 3rd on exit all the way to 5th for approach to Coppice (down 1)

Repeat ...

Top mate, thats great, I'm not a million miles from that. By comparison this is what I was doing (bear in mind first time on this bike, cold and limited time due to break downs (tilt switch and red flags, 45 miles in total)......no more excuses, here it is.

Coppice down 1, 5th gear entry.
Charlies down 1, 4th gear entry
Park Straight 6th by the lowest point (probably a bit early, need to pull the revs out more)
Park down 3 for third.
Chris Curve - grabbing 4th exiting Park and holding.
Gooseneck - holding 4th as rolling off,
Mansfield - either down 2 which was very peaky, down 1 and carry more in, felt more settled.
Chicane - down 1 closed throttle 2nd.
Towards left for Mountian grabbing 3rd and dropping again, entry in second and holding over mountian.
Tried 2nd and 3rd for Hall bends, third allowed smooth carriage of speed with a closed throttle to apex,
Down 1 for 2nd gear hair pin
Tried second for Barn, peakey, prefered 3rd and carrying speed in, feels more settled but less poke on exit. Up to 6th and so on.

Slightly different and no doubt slower ;-) I will try harder next time.

How did you go about getting tuition off Crafar?

Thanks for that by the way :icon_thumright:

If you are going to use Crafar's teachings then you're better off following all of his advice. If you sit right forward all the time then you cant brake hard enough, you must shift your weight backwards. I rememebr when people first started fitting stomp grips they complained that they werent any use because their knees werent touching the tank. This is because they sat too far forward on the seat under braking

We are talking at cross purposes here - Crafar teaches to sit right up against the tank all of the time to use it against your pelvis to assist with braking (agreed this would defy Stomp Grips for reasons you gave) and to reduce front wheel lift, and also to allow the rear to slide out in a safer fashion - CSS teaches a rearward seating position (at least a fists space between the jewels and the tank) and actively promotes Stomp Grips.

Yep, and early turn in, rolling into corners with a closed throttle and the withdrawl method so you don't get AIDS and it all works, honest.
